Description
Participants described how complexities of midlife impact their eating disorder. These complexities included changing responsibilities with parenting growing children and caregiving for aging parents, career concerns, and issues related to health care services. These complexities propelled them toward recovery, further exacerbated the illness, triggered a relapse after decades of recovery, or contributed to an initial onset of AN in midlife. These three domains are described and, although presented as discrete areas, they can overlap.
Anorexia nervosa (often just called anorexia) is where a person loses an unhealthy amount of weight on purpose through dieting, sometimes along with excessive exercise, binging, and/or purging. People with anorexia have a fear of gaining weight and a disturbed body image (such as thinking they are fat even when they are very underweight).
We are a centre of excellence for psychological and interdisciplinary, patient-centred research in appearance, disfigurement, body image and related studies. Our research services inform and support healthcare and education provision, social policy, media, corporate social responsibility agendas, and other areas of society.
