Initiating
The first meeting/assessment
- 1st impressions take 30 seconds to form
- heavy focus on physical attraction
- display of best self
- disclosing public info
"These people are so posh and snoby, they're snoshy. There.""Yeah but Nick's not like that" "Even if he isn't, I guarantee you the family is, which is why tonight, you need to not look like Sebastian from the Little Mermaid."
To prepare for the 1st meeting with Nick's parents, Rachel changes into formal wear. As "snoshy" people, appearance matters a great deal to Nick's family. Nick's mother, Eleanor, very obviously looks Rachel up and down.
Intensifying
Experimenting
Discovering common ground through dates and small talk.- figuring out what kind of relationship - sharing personal (not private) info - quick dates - small talk*This happened before the movie took place
The "euphoric stage"/"honeymoon" phase- reveal of personal info - impressions of the other person become important
- More time spent together - lasts about 3 months
Kitty Pong --Alistair's girlfriend-- A really bad actress
Alistair Cheng --Cousin of Nick--
Integrating
Bonding
Presenting as one unit- opening joint bank account - sending one card from the both of them
Announcing ones relationship to the world or putting the relationship on display. Living together, marriage, etc. An exclusive relationship.
Nick proposes to Rachel as she is about to leave back to NY, declaring his love for her to the world.
Nick announces that since it has been a year, he believes it is time Rachel meets his family, who live in Singapore. This is his way of beginning the integrating process, since the Young family is so selective of who they allow in. By presenting Rachel to his family, despite her background, Nick is showing that he is serious about their relationship.
Differenciating
- Stress on relationship
- "I" rather than "we"
- doing activities that aren't shared with partner
- cracking of unity
- overlooking similarities
Fiona Tung-Cheng Long suffering + 3 kids
Edison "Eddie"Cheng --Cousin of Nick-- "The Family Man"
Eddie is very ambitious, and will do whatever is necessary to further his own name. He pretends to be a "Family Man" for this very reason. Fiona puts up with it for some reason. In the video, they both begin to nitpick at each other as soon as no one is paying attention.
Problema
None of These Really Appear in the Movie
Avoidance
Circumscribing
Stagnating
Closing Off
Avoiding The Person
Reassurting Individuality
- Avoiding problems in relationship
- Avoiding conversational topics
- not talking about others flaws
- relationship comes to a standstill
- waiing for relationship to end
- Forming physical distance
- beginning of mental distance
- Avoiding controversial topics
- sharing less information/
- Physical distancing
- ignoring each other
- creating excuses to stay away
- minimal communication
Solution
Termination
Can be short or drawn out: leaving- both people decide to leave - neither are happy in relationship - ceasing of contact - divorce
Michael Teo self centered & controling husband
Astrid Leong-Teo --cousin of Nick-- "The Goddess"
Astrid leaves Michael, after he blows up at her for deciding to pretend as if he isn't having an affair to not cause a scene and accusing her of not caring about anything other than her public image. She realizes that she is unwilling to put up any longer with the cracks in their relationship, and divorces him, taking their son with her.
Healthly Relationship: The relationship between Rachel & Nick was strong. There was honesty and love shared between the two. After a year of dating, she was meeting the parents, and when rather than running away during the negativity directed at her, they pushed through it together. Unhealthy Relationship: Like every other romantic relationship was toxic. Astrids and Michaels in particular were holding each other back. The lack of communication made it worse.
Knapps Rating: 6/10 Only 6 of the stages were shown
Personal Rating: 6/10 Lived for the humour thrown in, but romance isn't my preferred kind of movie
It is posible to skip stages? Yes! However the movie does not show this. Even though the movie misses some stages, it is highly likely that they were followed during Rachel and Nicks relationship, and scenes were just not added to the movie. Astrid and Michael are also perfect examples of the Realtionship Dissolution/"Coming Apart" Stage. Despite only really the Termiantion Stage, there were small lines throughout the movie that hinted at all the stages being fullfilled.
