What is Folklore?

definition:

  • The word folklore, a compound of folk and lore, was coined in 1846 by the Englishman William Thoms, who contrived the term as a replacement for the contemporary terminology of "popular antiquities" or "popular literature". The second half of the word, lore, comes from Old English lār 'instruction'. It is the knowledge and traditions of a particular group, frequently passed along by word of mouth.
  • Folklore or also known as "folk·lor·is·tics" is a study of Folklore. It studies human expressive cultures that includes myths, legends, folk- and fairy-tales, jokes, proverbs, jump-rope rhymes, material culture, and much more.

Importance oF Folklore:

  • Folklore provides us with the knowledge to view these events from several angles. It demonstrates how all of our issues and victories have occurred throughout history and across all cultures. Although everyone of us is unique in our own way, these moral truths bind us all together.

folktales AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Folktales are stories in the oral tradition, or tales that people tell each other out loud, rather than stories in written form. They're closely related to many storytelling traditions, including fables, myths, and fairy tales.
  • They are sometimes criticized for being “flat” or too simple and lacking nuance. But this criticism misses the point that makes these timeless stories so appealing to kids. The simple plotlines, make it easier for kids to follow the action, remember critical details, tell characters apart, and understand consequences.

CHARACTERISTICS:

Shared orally for generations. Follow straight forward plotlines. Incorporate simple characters. Solve a central conflict or problem. Demonstrate decision making. Reinforce consequences. Highlight shared values or moral lessons. Take place in natural surroundings.

VALUES:

  • Folklore gives us the wisdom to understand these moments from different points of view. It showcases that all of our problems and successes happen in every culture and throughout different periods of history. We are unique as individuals, but we are all connected through these moral truths.
  • Folklorist William Bascom (1965) identifies four functions of folklore that also work in the family folk group. He asserts that folklore serves to (1) amuse, (2) validate culture, (3) educate, and (4) maintain conformity.

UsES:

  • -an inspiration for a story or poem.
  • -used as source of entertainment from the past
  • -tell the way of life was for common man
  • - used to tell the history as well as our values and ultimately who we are
  • - people gain their cultural heritage which, to a great extent, determines their further thinking, desires and attitudes
  • - used as an inspo for creating present/modern literature ( By analyzing the appeal of your favorite folk tales, you can develop valuable insights for your own writing)
  • - used by teachers to associate culture in teaching

Types of Folklore:

1. Fable - A fable is a story that often criticizes human nature and uses animals or inanimate objects instead of humans. Fables usually have a moral. 2. Fairy Tails - Entertaining stories which reveal a lot about human nature; always end happily; animals may speak sometimes; wishes come true as a result of a test or struggle. 3. Myth - explain the origins of life and/or elements of nature (how something came to be); usually have gods or supernatural beings. 4. Legends/epics - about heroes, individuals, or kings who lived before written record; embellished over time.

5. Tall tales - cultural stories with the pioneer spirit; may be based on real characters but often deal with exaggerated incidents or traits. 6. Parables - religious stories that communicate values. 7. Folklore - a category of culture that includes the folktales, art, literature, and knowledge of a culture. 8. Folktales - The name for a story from a culture which has been passed down for generations. These are supposed to communicate the values of the culture to the youth.
