Vocation Location
A way to introduce volunteering to students.
What is Vocation Location?
The idea behind Vocation Location is to highlight the different volunteer opportunities that are available in Leeds for students to get involved with.
I would want to have a guest speaker come in each month to talk to students (either in person or online) about their organization/project and how the students can get involved.
I envision we can let students know about this through the use of newsletters, that can be sent to the student, put up around the campuses and also by having them presented before classes.
Potential Risks
Risk that would need to go into account are making sure the companies that are contacted for this are checked and verified. A way I believe I could do this is via contacting the Universities and their SUs as they advertise volunteer opportunities to their students.
I also know I would have to get the guest speaker’s risk assessments done before they go ahead with the talks
Benefits to Students
The benefits this programme could hold for students is that it not only gives them new skills to boost their employability, but also is something they can add onto their resume to show them that they experienced and engaged in activities.
It will also assist in the transition to HEI. It gives them an activity they can continue with while they are at the HEI, give them a consistency during the transition. It can also help with keeping them engaged with the activities the HEI offer, be it other volunteer opportunities or societies.
Highlighting the volunteer opportunities from LBU and UOL could also help with the transition to these centres, as the student would already be familiar with an aspect of the university and could help with forming connections between the other students
One potential idea I have is to invite the Beckett allotments groups for a talk. Student have expressed their like of the nature of the UK and how it is a different experience versus what they have in their home country.
Not only would the allotments allow them to get more involved with something we would not normally offer, but also give them access to new practical skills.
I volunteered for this group when I attended LBU so know what work is expected and how they schedule activities.
Another potential idea I have is to invite the RSPCA groups for a talk. Student have expressed their interested in getting involved in larger organisations in the UK and also this would give them a chance to experience work we normally wouldn’t offer.
Not only would the charity work let them know how that wors in the UK, it would also introduce them to working in a larger organisations. It could also give them a chance to work with animals at the RSPCA.
I am familiar with managers of RSPCA groups and am aware of work they offer-fundraising, animal care, web design and open day staff.
