What is Nickel?
Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Nickel has high electrical and thermal conductivity. It has a face-centred cubic crystal structure. Nickel reacts slowly with oxygen and isn’t radioactive. It is a solid. It can be beaten into thin sheets. It’s capable of being shaped or bent. It shows a shine or glow. It is harder than iron and is easily magnetized.

Nickel is the first element in the tenth column of the periodic table. It is classified as a transition metal. Group 10, period 4, block d. Nickel is a metal and therefore it contains positive ions, called protons, which are surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons, which are negative ions. There is a strong force of attraction between these positive and negative ions, and this requires a large amount of energy to break.

The Discovery of Nickel
It was discovered by Swedish chemist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt. In 1751, Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, working at Stockholm, investigated a new mineral – now called nickeline (NiAs) – which came from a mine at Los, Hälsingland, Sweden. He thought it might contain copper but what he extracted was a new metal which he announced and named nickel in 1754. The name is the shortened for of the German 'kupfernickel' meaning either devil's copper or St. Nicholas's copper.

The Uses of Nickel
Nickel is used in batteries, including rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries used in hybrid vehicles. Nickel has a long history of being used in coins. The US five-cent piece (known as a 'nickel') is 25% nickel and 75% copperIt is used in making wires. It is used in gas turbines and rocket engines as it has the capability to resist corrosion even at high temperatures. Nickel plays a role in the cells of plants and some microorganisms. It is sometimes added to glass to give it a green color.

Nickel is one of only four metals that are ferromagnetic, meaning they are attracted to magnets and are magnetic themselves. The others are iron, cobalt and gadolinium.
The U.S. five cent coin, the "nickel", is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel.
There is approximately 95 million metric tons of nickel in the world.
