Blood SPatter Analysis
FSC: Monday 11.14There will be three stations (set up outside) for you to examine different blood patterns- passive, transfer, and impact.
Impact
Passive
This type of pattern includes dripping, pooling, and clotting of blood. These deal with the impact of gravity.
These type of spatters occur when energy is exerted on a blood source. This is where we see the effects of blunt/sharp force trauma. Different velocities will determine size and shape of the patterns.
What to Do:
Using a fake blood solution, experiment with different surfaces to visualize edge characteristics (like scalloping or spines) and satellite stains.
What to Do:
Investigate the variation of blood patterns in refernece to tools used and speed (or force exerted).
Transfer
What to Do:
With the fake blood solution, test prints (like shoe prints or fingerprints). Additionally, you can drag items (like gloves or clothing) across a surface to examine feathering.
Transfer stains are formed when two objects/surfaces come into contact with one another- one with blood and one without. These include patterns of wiping, swiping, and feathering.
