Giving a presentation

Oral academic discourse is often less formal than its written counterpart. In fact, it is getting increasingly more conversation. However there are still many formulaic expressions and, of course, technical language.

Introducing the speaker or presenter

There are many ways to present a speaker. Below are a few real examples. This kind of formulaic language as we can see with the last two examples with the verb "present"

Hi, everyone. Thank you for coming. I'd like to introduce Dr. Tracy Man, professor at UCLA, here to talk about her book "Secrets from the eating lab".

Starting a presentation

Once again, there is an almost infinite number of ways of starting a talk. Here are a few real examples

I'd like to begin with a brief overview of the history of the invention of writing.

Several articles mention possible higher risk among people who take ACE inhibitors or ARBs for hypertension. Is there actually a higher risk? Has this been tested? Let's start with a brief overview of the ACE receptor with regards to SARs-CoV2.

But I'd like to begin by looking at the problems caused by homophobia against women.

In this talk, I'm going to take you through the four main legally approaches applied to sex work throughout the world and explain why they don't work. Why prohibiting the sex industry actually exacerbates every harm that sex workers are vulnerable to and then I am going to tell you what we, as sex workers, actually want.

If there are many ways to start a presentation, the number of things one can say in a presentation is infinite. Here are just a few.

OK, now let's turn to what is in some ways a deeper connection between meditation and the modular view of the mind

But anyway, getting back to your question. There is an end game to this as I see it and the end game is that.

So, moving on. I'd like to just quickly touch on some of the activities an animal actually does present with SARS CoV2 in a health official's jurisdiction.

I actually had a little bit to do with the origin of the notion of the signifying monkey. I'll come back to that later.

Ending a presentation and questions

There are a series of formulaic expressions when ending a presentation and opening up the sesssion to questions

So, to sum up then, this was a first-stage bit of research on a very small scale. We looked at a very limited number of devices. We looked at very limited exposure times of ten minutes.

I don't know how much time we have for more questions but one more perhaps.
