I Ate Too Much By Jack Prelutsky I ate too much turkey, I ate too much corn, I ate too much pudding and pie, I'm stuffed up with muffins and much too much stuffin', I'm probably going to die. I piled up my plate and I ate and I ate, but I wish I had known when to stop, for I'm so crammed with yams, sauces, gravies, and jams that my buttons are starting to pop. I'm full of tomatoes and french fried potatoes, my stomach is swollen and sore, but there's still some dessert, so I guess it won't hurt if I eat just a little bit more.

I thought I’d awaken to a world in mourning. Heavy clouds crowding, a society storming. But there’s something different on this golden morning. Something magical in the sunlight, wide and warming. I see a dad with a stroller taking a jog. Across the street, a bright-eyed girl chases her dog. A grandma on a porch fingers her rosaries. She grins as her young neighbor brings her groceries.

I scarcely felt a breath of air; I didn’t hear a sound, But one small leaf came spiraling In circles to the ground. And then the wind began to rise. I felt it on my face. It blew my jacket out behind And made the white clouds race. It seized the branches of the trees And shook with might and main. The leaves poured down upon the earth Like drops of colored rain.

Padded drum of beating wings fills the steel gray sky. See them sketching, stretching skyward. Hear their lonely cry. See them in the windswept autumn. Hear them call goodbye.

I walk a lonely road The only one that I have ever known Where the city sleeps And I’m the only one and I walk alone My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me
