How can WE get people to really recognize the value of becoming part of a learning community and experience the benefits of social learning?

What is the problem?

Group work isn’t often done collaboratively by students

Instead, students see education as competition or a one-man sport

WHY?

There are many reasons:

  • teaching tradition
  • lack of scafolding
  • competitive culture
  • difficulty in assessment
  • time constraints
  • student anxiety
  • lack of appreciation of collaboration

REDEFINE GROUP... ...AS TEAM

COLLABORATION IS NOT COMPETITION TEAM MEMBERS have a common shared goal to strive towards GROUP MEMBERS may have different objectives and may strive to complete their individual tasks

TEAM FORMATIOn

FORMING TEAMS:

  • should not based on choice (e.g. friends - less objective),
  • should be based on other skills (hobbies, talents etc.)
