International sections : an introduction

Historical background

International Sections functioning within the state education system are not new in France. In 1981, the French government responded to the growing demand among parents for bilingual education by approving the introduction of foreign sections in other French schools. The British international section of Lycée Pissarro was opened in 2014 with the first cohort graduating in 2017. While there are several schools in the Paris area which offer a bilingual curriculum through International sections, ours is the only one so far in the Val d’Oise. We see this as a tremendous opportunity not only for children who wish to sustain and develop a bilingualism/biculturalism

Goals of the British Section

Develop biculturalism

Develop bilingualism

International Sections integrate, within the French system, teaching that is relevant not only to the language but also to the culture and teaching methods of the partner country

The essential aim of Section students is to become equally fluent in English and French

Facilitate the integration of foreign students

he International Section facilitates the integration and adaptation of our "French-speaking" and "non-French-speaking" students into the French school system upon their eventual return or expatriation to France
