Culturally Responsive Instructional Strategies

Classroom set up

Your classroom should reflect diverse communities (Howard, 2020). It should make all students feel welcome and wanted. This will result in students wanting to be in school and willing to learn.

Activating students' prior knowledge

Students will enter your classroom with different background knowledge. Their background knowledge can come from personal experiences, home dynamics, and even previous educational years. Students can connect what they already know to what are they currently learning.

Three examples of adaptations

Audio Recordings

  • Supports different leveled readers
  • Supports ENL
  • Introduces new vocabulary and language

Small group

  • Comfortable learning experiences can set a student up for success.
  • Peer learning opportunities
  • Sharing ideas, knowledge and experiences

"Talk it out"

  • Allow students to think outside of the box and explain their findings with other students.
  • Learn from peers.

Technologies

Translating applications Applicatios such as Google Translate, Reverso, or iTranslate can help educators create paperwork or letters home to parents that do not speak English. .

Kids Planet Discovery This is an application that allows students to learn about different cultures, food, music, etc. Students can learn a lot about their peers and classmates while playing interactive games using this application.

Class Dojo An application for educators to effectively communicate with parents. This application has the option to translate messages to other languages.

Professional practices

Discovery learning Letting students explore technology independently. "Doing" instead of observing can allow student to become familiar with features.

Collaboration with Classmates Allowing your students to explore technology together. They can learn from one another and become comfortable with new programming.

Modeling Show students exactly what is expected and how to navigate with the technology you are implementing.

Recommendation for Colleagues

Online etiquette

Student interests

Time management

Teach online etiquette to your students. Make sure that they are aware of how to act while using technology. Inform them on the "do's and don'ts". Set expectations.

Students should be limited for time when using technology. This can help students stay on task and achieve the goal set for them to complete without being distracted.

Incorporate technology that students draw interest to. If students are excited about technology, it will lead to increased participation.

Presentor Notes

Slide 2

As an educator, get to know your students. Know their background, what they are comfortable with, what they are exposed to, and how they learn best! This will create a positive working environment when incorporating technology.

Slide 3

Allow your students to have a choice. Each student learns differently. They may benefit from technology in the classroom. Audio recordings, talking it out and small groups can help children meet their goals when using technology.

Slide 4

If an educator integrates high-interest resources or topics into the classroom, students will become more invested in their learning (Deady, 2020).

When you give your students the opportunity to explore new technology freely, it gives them a chance to learn independently (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2017).
