An Operating System is the software that manages computer hardware, software resources. It allows you to communicate with the computer. Without an operating system, a computer is useless.

Early computers were generally built to perform a series of single tasks, they were built without any operating systems.

The second generation

In the early 1950’s the first operating system was created for the IBM computer 701, was developed by General Motors and was called GMOS. Is generally considered to be the first batch operating system.

The third generation

In the 1960s, designers introduced multiprogramming, as it played a vital role in developing operating systems that allow a CPU to perform different tasks on a computer at the same time.

A new development in minicomputers started to grow in 1961, the DEC PDP-1 was introduced, it was essentially the first step toward the minicomputers to come later in the decade.

IBM made some of the biggest waves in computer history thus far. System/360 family, IBM hoped to create a system of compatible computers that blurred the line between work and play.

In 1961, IBM played a key role in terms of features, design, speed, and storage, the company made countless advancement with each new release.

The Invention of UNIX

Was created by programmers at Bell Labs, UNIX brought togethers timesharing software with file management technology.

Before the internet was invented, there was ARPANET. Was created as a way for the US Department of Defense.

APPLE DOS

Is the family of disk operating system for the Apple || series, Steve Wozniak believed he could write a Dos for the Apple || after he designed the DISK|| controller for the new computer.

UNIX/32V

It is the first 32-bit version of the Unix operating system created by Bell labs, 32V could only run on the VAX-11/780 as it was the only existed VAX at that time.

THE FOURTH GENERATION

The fourth generation of operating systems is related to the development of the personal computers. Two major factors related to creating personal computers was Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft created Windows operating system first in 1985. Apple also created the Apple Macintosh in the 1980s, it was a momentous success for it was user-friendly. Windows development was influenced by the Macintosh, which created intense competition between the two companies.

Windows is a GUI operating system, developed by Microsoft. It was released for both home and professional computing. First released in 1983 then Microsoft released many versions afterwards till this day.
