OS
Operating system
An Operating System is the software that manages computer hardware, software resources. It allows you to communicate with the computer. Without an operating system, a computer is useless.
OS
OS
Operating system gaols
- Manage all resources of a computer.
- construct a user interface.
- provide software application execution and support.

OS
Operating system Importance
The most essential piece of a computer software is the operating system. It manages all the computer's hardware and software along with the memory and processes. It allows the user to communicate with the computer even though without knowing it's language.
Operating system Importance
Batch
Batch Operating system
OS
every user conducts their tasks on an unconnected device, such as a punch card, then submits it to the computer operation.
Time Sharing
time sharing OS
Enables multiple users to use a single computer simultaneously who are each placed at a different terminal (shell).
Real Time
real time OS
it's responce and proseccing times to inputs are very rapid.
Operating system Importance
Distributed
distributed OS
OS
utilize multiple processors spread over various machines to offer its users a very quick computation.
Network
network OS
runs on a server. It offers the ability to manage users, data, security, and other networking services.
Mobile
mobile OS
designed to run mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

1940s to early 1950s
1940
the first generation
Early computers were generally built to perform a series of single tasks, they were built without any operating systems.
1950s
1956
The second generation
In the early 1950’s the first operating system was created for the IBM computer 701, was developed by General Motors and was called GMOS. Is generally considered to be the first batch operating system.
1960s
1960
The third generation
In the 1960s, designers introduced multiprogramming, as it played a vital role in developing operating systems that allow a CPU to perform different tasks on a computer at the same time.
A new development in minicomputers started to grow in 1961, the DEC PDP-1 was introduced, it was essentially the first step toward the minicomputers to come later in the decade.

IBM
System/360
IBM made some of the biggest waves in computer history thus far. System/360 family, IBM hoped to create a system of compatible computers that blurred the line between work and play.
In 1961, IBM played a key role in terms of features, design, speed, and storage, the company made countless advancement with each new release.

ARPANET Goes Online
The Invention of UNIX
Was created by programmers at Bell Labs, UNIX brought togethers timesharing software with file management technology.
Before the internet was invented, there was ARPANET. Was created as a way for the US Department of Defense.

1970
REAL-TIME BASIC
UNIVAC produced the Real-Time basic (RTB) system to support large-scale time sharing
1971
Intel debuts microprocessor
Intel released the first microprocessor to be available for home computers. The Intel 4004 a 4-bit processor.
1972
Operating system/virtual storage 1
1970
OS/VS1 is a discontinued IBM mainframe computer operating system supported virtual memory, designed to be run on IBM System/370 hardware .
1974
CP/M
Control program/monitor later control program for microcomputers, is as operating system created in 1974 for Intel 8080/85 by Gary Kildall. Later versions of CP/m added multi-user variations and were migrated to 16-bit processor.
1974
DOS-11
Is an operating system by Digital Equepment Corporation (DEC) the first operating system to run on the digital PDP-11, though it was not easy to use.
1977
VIRTUAL MEMORY SYSTEM-VMS
1970
It is a multi-user multiprocessing and virtual memory-based operating system, was designed to support time-sharing, batch processing, transaction processing and workstation application.
1978
APPLE DOS
Is the family of disk operating system for the Apple || series, Steve Wozniak believed he could write a Dos for the Apple || after he designed the DISK|| controller for the new computer.
1979
UNIX/32V
It is the first 32-bit version of the Unix operating system created by Bell labs, 32V could only run on the VAX-11/780 as it was the only existed VAX at that time.

THE FOURTH GENERATION
The fourth generation of operating systems is related to the development of the personal computers. Two major factors related to creating personal computers was Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft created Windows operating system first in 1985. Apple also created the Apple Macintosh in the 1980s, it was a momentous success for it was user-friendly. Windows development was influenced by the Macintosh, which created intense competition between the two companies.
WINDOWS
Windows is a GUI operating system, developed by Microsoft. It was released for both home and professional computing. First released in 1983 then Microsoft released many versions afterwards till this day.
some of Windows versions Microsoft released:
MICROSOFT
Windows 2.0
Windows 1.0
Windows Xp
Windows 98
Windows 7
Windows 10
MACINTOSH
Is a GUI operating system introduced by Apple Inc in 1984, to be installed and operated on the Apple Macintosh series of computers .its considered the pioneer of GUI OS.
some versions of Macintosh series released:
APPLE
Macintosh system software- system 1
System 6
Mac OS X 10
Mac OS 9
MacOS Monterey
MacOS Ventura

Operating System/2
1990
Is a series of computer operating systems, initially created by Microsoft and IBM, it was intended as a protected-mode.
1993
Newton OS
Is an Operating System for the Apple Newton PDAs, it was written in C++ and trimmed to consume lower power and use the available memory efficiently.
1997
AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive)
Is a series of proprietary Unix OS, developed and sold by IBM for several of its computers, it was the first operating system to have a journaling file system.
1999
Inferno
Is a distributed operating system started at Bell Labs, most of the Inferno commands are similar to Unix commands with the same name. Last version was released in 1999
