He is known to spend his time drinking rum and smoking cigars, swearing profusely and making filthy jokes to the other loas. Baron's time is spent lingering at the crossroads of life and death in the human world. When someone dies, Baron is said to dig their grave and meet their soul as it rises from the grave. He guides them into the underworld. Only Baron Samedi has the power to accept an individual into the world of the dead.

What is the link between that period and what happened to Marcel?
Maybe Marcel’s ancestors were slave owners and they did something terribly wrong. Maybe they killed slaves, maybe they separated families. Maybe they didn’t respect the Black Code and someone sought revenge, felt cheated, persecuted ... Maybe slaves sought revenge and used voodoo magic. Maybe they killed slaves and the spirits of the dead slaves cursed Marcel’s family. Maybe slaves asked their voodoo queen to get revenge.

a) Listen again. Find information on the origin of the curse afflicting Marcel’s family.

His ancestor, Jean-Baptiste Lefleur / killing three of his slaves / violation of the Black code / slaves community / voodoo priest, revenge / curse / Marcel’s family has to give three lives in return.

b) Recap the information you collected on the Lefleur curse.

Jean-Baptiste Lefleur was Marcel’s ancestor in the 1720s. He was a prosperous slave owner but he was a brutal / cruel master. He killed three of his slaves. The slaves relied on their voodoo priest to help them enact their revenge. The voodoo priest cursed the Lefleurs: starting in 1820, one young member of the family dies of a mysterious death and Marcel will be the last victim of the curse if the curse is not broken or if the voodoo priest is not stopped.

Recap Rose is freaking out because Marcel doesn’t feel any better. She feels there is something wrong with him but she can’t explain it. She came to her grandmother, Seraphina, for help because first the shop is close-by and because her gran is a Voodoo queen. She hopes she can use her “special Mama Phina’s Mojo” = occult powers to help Marcel .

Dear Mrs Grayson, I am Seraphina Lavereaux, I’m a Voodoo Queen from the French Quarter in New Orleans. I’m writing to ask your help for my granddaughter Rose and her friend Marcel. Marcel was cursed during the Krewe of Boo festival. He was given a gris-gris by a mysterious man and he suddenly collapsed and remained unconscious. He was helped by Rose and he was taken to my voodoo shop to be examined. I discovered that he was cursed by a powerful evil voodoo priest. I think his ancestors were punished by ancient spirits. Please, we need your expertise to understand and break this curse. Help us! Thank you for your time and your help, Yours sincerely, Seraphina Lavereaux

All is well that ends well!

Baron Samedi is "the master of the dead", he's a voodoo deity. He takes the soul of a dead person to the underworld = into the afterlife

What’s wrong with Marcel ? Pay attention to Seraphina’s explanations.

He’s cursed. He got a bad gris-gris that made him ill. He’s the victim of bad / malevolent / dark voodoo. Someone is coming for him and it’s seriously freaky. Somebody wishes him ill.

Louisiana voodoo =

Religion people pactise / part of their everyday spirituality

African spiritual beliefs brought by the enslaved Africans (early 1700)

Roman Catholicism they were required to practice in Louisiana

- Her name is Marie Laveau. - She was a Voodoo queen. - She was born in New Orleans in 1801 and she died in 1881. - She was a very important figure of the voodoo religion.

There is a cross above a tomb = grave, there are two coffins on either side, there are flowers and little X letters. The cross is a reference to Catholicism. The coffins refer to dead people / the burial of the dead . The tomb below the cross is a reference to the graveyard = cemetery. It is bigger than the coffin so maybe it is Baron Samedi’s vault. Baron Samedi is an important figure, he rules over dead people in their after-life.

Your notes:

Bayou (St John Lake), swamps, out in public in Congo Square in the historic Armstrong Park, just behind the French Quarter.

Your conclusion:

Voodoo is a religion that people still practice in public places. They don’t always practise hidden in swamps and bayous.

This is Seraphina’s shop, she works in the French Carre in New Orleans. She sells items related to Voodoo. There are masks, trinkets, potions, dolls, little religious statues. The shop is packed with items. Seraphina is an old black lady. She’s dressed in traditional clothes: she’s wearing a colourful dress and a turban. Rose is with Marcel, she’s his girlfriend. They went to the festival of Krewe together but Marcel fainted and Rose looks worried for him . Maybe Rose knows the old lady Seraphina.

There is a man dancing in the middle. There are other people around him. They are holding candles. It looks like a ceremony. In the background there is an altar with a statue of the Virgin Mary, it refers to Catholicism. This part looks like Christian religion. In the foreground there are both black people and white people (on the right) . The man in the middle has his hand on the head of a lady, maybe he’s a Voodoo priest / practitioner he’s dressed in white and looks as if he were in a trance.

Title: Baron Samedi's looks. What Baron samedi looks like.

Seraphina had a vision of Marcel in the bayou. He was lying on an altar and the voodoo priest was performing a ritual. It could be the end of the Lefleur curse and a vision of Marcel’s imminent death. Seraphina slipped into the priest’s mind to find how to break the curse. She managed to snatch three clues from his mind before he cut the connection. Rose freaked out and urged Seraphina to save her friend.

There is a veve on the left, a sentence at the top and a skull on the right. Inside the skull, there is a couple kissing. The skull represents death, Marcel's death. The kiss refers to love. So, it could refer to Rose and Marcel's love. Maybe it means that: - Marcel and Rose have to kiss to break the curse: the kiss of life. - Only love can triumph over death - Love is stronger than death. Marcel and Rose will die together like Romeo and Juliet.

The document is a high school newspaper article. It was written by Isabelle Beauregard and published on the twentieth of October 2020. I guess it was during New Orleans’ Official Halloween Parade. There’s a photo with the article and we can see two teenagers in the foreground and some floats in the background. The headline is ”Panic at the Krewe of Boo Festival” so I suppose there was an incident during the carnival / the parade.
