English is one of three official languages in New Zealand, along with Te Reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language.

  • NZ ENG- different from USA or UK ENG
  • some mistake it Australian accent
    • based on south-east England

  • weights- NZE follows BrE with tonne
  • in hyperbolic statements- ton and tons- commonly used
  • few small differences – would not be considered wrong to use the BrE

In most cases New Zealand is following British English spelling.

  • spelt with either an -ise or an -ize ending
    • NZE prefers -ise.
  • Gram, kilogram- preferably spelled without
the extra -me.

  • Yeah nah: Yes, but… (sometimes Kiwis use this phrase during a conversation to fill space or give them some thinking time, a bit like 'um'. Occasionally you'll hear someone say "Nah, yeah", which means 'no, but...'
  • Everything is good as gold: Everything is great
  • He is packing a sad: He is upset, for example 'Mark is packing a sad' means 'Mark is upset'
  • It’s a cracker of a day: It’s a beautiful day

Flatten your vowels-

  • the short "I" flattened and pronounced like a "U"
    • "Fish and chips" - "fush and chups."

Listen to native’s vowel pronunciation-

  • the vowel "E" into an "EEE" sound
    • "ten minutes" - "teen meenuts"
  • the short "A" like a long "O" in the short "A"
    • "awesome" or "Auckland"- "oarsome" or "Oarkland"
  • the other "A" like a long "E." in the "A,"
    • "accent" or "hands" - "eccent" or "hends"

Learn the different pronunciation of some words-

  • the word "data"- often pronounced in American English- "Dah-tah," not "day-taa"- British English
  • debut is pronounced "de-booo," almost unrecognizable from the usual
