Why did the Anglo-Saxons come to Britain? (Fighting)
The Romans hired the Anglo-Saxons as fighters around AD 380 to help them fight the Picts. The Anglo-Saxons were fierce warriors and the Romans preferred to have them on their side rather than fight them.

Why did the Anglo-Saxons come to Britain? (Farming)
Scandinavia suffered from flooding. It meant it was hard to farm and produce enough food for everyone. Many Anglo-Saxons left their homelands looking for somewhere else to farm. They brought their tools with them and arrived peacefully.

Why did the Anglo-Saxons come to Britain? (Invitation)
After the Romans left Britain, the Picts and Scots attacked from Scotland. The Britons needed help to defend themselves. King Vortigern asked for help against the Picts. According to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle, he invited two Jutes called Hengist and Horsa to Britain in AD449 and paid them to fight. They decided to stay and took Vortigern's kingdom from him.
