DEFINITION

Sequence adverbs are used to describe the order in which two or more actions happen, and help us understand the time relationship between sentences and ideas.

FIRST

"First" is number one. When we're giving instructions or we're giving steps, this is how we would start for an action that happens before any others.

(Primero)

First, blow up one of the balloons and tie it.

Action that will happen after the one just mentioned.

Next, put 60 milliliters (¼ cup) of water in the other balloon and tie that too.

Used for an action that happens after another action if it’s not immediate

Then, light the candle.

Used to indicate an action that you have to do immediately after some other.

After that, bring the first balloon closer to the candle.
