American food

Maybe the US is most famous for “fast foods”. The first fast food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they _____ (serve) other kinds of food too. Inside there is often a “salad bar”, where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want. Americans _____ (eat) a lot, and when they ___ (go) to a restaurant, they _______ (not) expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate — sometimes it can be too much. But if you can’t finish it all, don’t worry: they will give you a “doggy bag” and you can take it home. Most Americans now ____ (have) a light breakfast instead of the traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. But on weekends there is more time, and a large late breakfast or early lunch is often eaten with family or friends.

What is “American” food? The answer ___ (be) that it is part Italian, part British, part German, part Mexican, part Chinese… When people from other countries came to live in the US, they brought different cooking traditions. Some of them opened restaurants. Today Americans ______ (enjoy) food from all over the world. Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. Doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847 a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out the centre and his mother cooked them — and they were very tasty!

VOCABULARY

Hello! My name is Jacob. I'm fourteen years old and I am a student at the Brook Hill School in Dallas. I get up at nine o'clock even though my lessons start at 9.30. I'm always late to school but I can't skip a hearty breakfast! My morning meal typically consists of some fried potatoes, bacon, four sausages, two ham and cheese sandwiches. I hate tea and coffee so my drink of choice for breakfast is coke! After suffering through two lessons I have lunch. My mom usually packs me a lunchbox but I prefer going to a nearby cafeteria with my friends. There I spend my pocket money on some burgers, fries, coke and sometimes an apple pie. When lessons are over, my father picks me up and we go to the McDonald's drive through. I order a large portion of fries, nuggets, two burgers and my favourite coke! For dinner, we typically have some chicken with roasted potatoes, a soup and a pie.

VOCABULARY

Hello! My name is Alison. I'm fifteen years old and I am a student at the Fay private School in Massachusetts. Every day I get up at six o'clock and go for a run. I'm usually done by eight, so I have enough time to have proper breakfast before going to school. My morning meal typically consists of some cereal or salad and an apple or a banana. I detest coffee and tea, that's why I always drink a glass of orange juice. Sometimes I have to skip lunch when I've got too many lessons or homework, but I always try to consume at least a banana or an energy bar. When lessons are over, I rush home to do my homework. After I'm done with it, I cook dinner. My evening meal consists of some rice, chicken and a salad. And a cup of orange juice, of course!
