Some information about Water
Relevance of water - The main uses of water in Portugal include supply to populations, agriculture (irrigation and animal watering) and industrial use, as consumptive uses, and hydroelectric generation, as a non-consumptive use. Available fresh water - Portugal has few (and small) natural lakes, so most of the available fresh water is found in precipitation, in that which flows superficially through rivers, in that which infiltrates (aquifers) and in that which is stored in reservoirs.

Some information about Water
The distribution of precipitation on the continental territory is quite heterogeneous. The regions situated north of the Tejo have annual precipitation above the country's average, while the regions to the south have lower values. Climate change affects all regions of the world and Portugal is no exception. Rising temperatures and drought situations are increasingly frequent and have serious consequences in terms of water supply to populations, agriculture and industry, and also in terms of electricity production.
The national water policies
In articulation or concerted action with other countries of the European Union
- Portugal, as a member state of the European Union complies with the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC), which is an instrument for sustainable water management.
- This Framework Directive aims to protect all waters within the European Union and improve their quality, not only surface waters, but also groundwater, transitional waters and coastal waters.
- It obliges Member States to ensure that all waters meet certain quality criteria and achieve good status.

National water legislation and regulation
The Water Law The Water Law (Law no. 58/2005) is a norm that not only establishes the obligations of the Portuguese State in relation to the protection of water and the provision of its general functions, but also establishes the processes that guarantee its effective execution. The major objective is to promote a sustainable management of water resources. National Water Plan Establishes the major options for national water policy and the principles and guidelines to be applied by the hydrographic region management plans and other water planning instruments. Other public and private organisations related to the water sector.

Cooperation Convention for the Protection and Sustainable Use of Water from Luso-Spanish Hdrographic Basins Dams - There are around 260 large dams in Portugal, whith a height of more than 15 metres or storage of more than 1 million cubic metres. Construction of Water Collection and Treatment Stations and Wastewater Treatment Stations Monitoring and control areas in the management of water distribution networks

Some specific and recurrent (short-term) national actions
National and local awareness-raising campaigns on reducing water use, particularly in drought situations. An example of the "Let's turn off the tap to drought" campaign is promoted by Grupo Águas de Portugal and the Portuguese Environment Agency, as part of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action's Drought Combat Measures, and has the partnership of the Regulatory Authority for Water and Waste Services and funding from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action's Environmental Fund.

The local water situation
Information about the Municipality of Alijó
In the geographical area of the Municipality of Alijó, where our school is located, there are two dams: - one to collect water for domestic consumption and; - the other for hydroelectric production.
There are also 15 mini Water Collection and Treatment Plants. Sanitation and wastewater treatment are public services of a structural nature, essential to the general well-being, public health and safety of the population, to economic activities and to the protection of the environment.
