Statement of Rationale
This document will explain why there are differences between the paths for student progressing to University of Leeds and those progressing to Leeds Beckett University
Which University are you progressing to?
Leeds Beckett University
University of Leeds
University of Leeds
The University of Leeds' Learning Structure tends to be more focused on research:
- This can include the development of research methods.
- Identifying a topic
- Carrying out your own research projects and collaborating with others.
- This is facilitated by the subject tutors, many of whom have carried out their own research in related fields.
- The university still offers placements in which to develop vocational skills.
This page will explain how this is reflected in your course

Leeds Beckett University
Leeds Beckett University learning style is a more vocational style. This learning type is based more on the development of employment skills:
- Lectures and seminars discuss how your chosen industry works.
- The development of projects feed directly into the development of employment skills.
- Tutors tend to come from backgrounds of having careers relevant to your course, though many have also participated in their own research projects.
- Research learning will also be embedded into the courses, such as creating a dissertation or creating written reflections.

How Leeds ISC courses reflect this.
The courses you will be studying in Leeds ISC reflect these two different learning styles in a variety of ways. We embed vocational and research based learning across all of courses. This means that you are well prepared when you progress to your chosen university through your Academic English Skills and Project Skills/Studying and Research modules.
This final slide explains why some courses may differ:
Why some courses differ
Some courses at Leeds ISC differ not only due to the requirements for the course at the progression university, but also to help facilitate a smooth transition between the teaching/learning you will have at Leeds ISC and the teaching/learning at your chosen university.
