WHAT IS A CLIL PYRAMID?

The CLIL Pyramid is a planning tool to help teachers organize their lessons. It is based on the 4Cs-Framework: content, cognition, communication and culture. It follows the principles based on CLIL insights, second language acquisition, methodology, cognitivism, observation and critical thinking.

The clil pillars

  • CONTENT:
The contents are focused on knowledge and personalised learning (students create their own knowledge). Activity:
  • COGNITION:
Thinking processes are analysed in their linguistic demands. Activity:
  • COMMUNICATION:
There is a relationship between the language, the context, the contents and the cognitive processes. Activity:
  • CULTURE:
Intercultural awareness. Activity:

4Cs-Framework (Oliver Meyer, 2010)

PYRAMID STEPS

2. Choice of media: It is related to the selection of resources (digital resources, authentic materials and realia). Activity:

3. Task design: We must take into account the input (must be meaningful, taking into account students´ interests), and the functional and academic language. Activity:

4. CLIL workout: Review of contents and activate the previous knowledge. Activity:

1. Topic selection: The topic must be chosen according to the students´ age and cognition, taking into account the official curiculum. Activity:

Pyramid Steps (Oliver Meyer, 2010)

TOPIC SELECTION

The content is given by the Royal Decree 126/2014, of February 28th, which establishes the basic curriculum of Primary Education. Basic curriculum of Primary Education. Subject: Natural Sciences. BLOCK 2: Human beings and health. Healthy habits to prevent disease.

Topic Selection

CHOICE OF MEDIA

STRATEGIES FOR DESIGNING CLIL-ORIENTED TASKS (OLIVER MEYER, 2010)

This implies considering the students developmental stage, linguistic competence, and also linking learning to students´ experiences. Therefore, tasks must be designed to combine both higher order thinking and lead to genuine and meaningful communication in different formats and ways. It is essential to encourage students to share knowledge as it requires cognitive skills, understanding of others, their ideas and their culture. The more demanding the task, the more scaffolding students need to ensure the learning.
