Houdini sportswear, named after the famous escape artist is trying to break out of the box which represents the traditional way the fashion industry has worked for hundreds of years. It tears down the barriers and leads the industry towards a more nature centered future. In the following case study we are going to present Houdini’s development journey from a simple outdoor sportswear brand to a circular clothing company. They outgrew their original purpose as they moved toward sustainability and now their focus is to become carbon negative, meaning they are even reducing the general CO2 levels and not just stopping their own emissions.
CASE STUDY
Natsai Audrey Chieza is a designer on a mission to reduce pollution in the fashion industry while creating amazing new things to wear. In her lab, he noticed that the bacteria Streptomyces coelicolor makes a striking red-purple pigment, and now she's using it to develop bold, color-fast fabric dye that cuts down on water waste and chemical runoff. She isn't alone in using synthetic biology to redefine our material future.

In episode 48 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, host Niclas Bornling explains and discusses what is means to have a circular product range as a company and how to get there. Niclas is an international Swede that has lived and worked in France and the US, currently living in Portland, OR—married to an amazing woman from Portland and father of two boys. He has spent most of his career in the outdoor and sports industry. Together with sailing and skiing, one of his biggest passions is the concept of a brand and how this intangible thing can connect on an emotional level with people. He hates the word “consumer” and envies people who believe. One day he’ll start a blog, and it will be called ”I don’t know.”
