Do you rember this ICONIC moment?

or this ICONIC pose?

I want to go a little bit further back and tell you about an athlete who won a gold medal before you could find it out on a viral video

Athletes like these have become household names, helping Team GB climb the medal rankings.

Harry Edwards was a sprinter and was the first black athletes to compete for Great Britain at the Olympic Games and is the first-known black athlete to win a medal.

I found this guy called Harry Edward

Born in 1898 in Berlin, Harry Francis Vincent Edward had a comfortable upbringing. His German mother, Magdalene, was a pianist; his West Indian father, Vincent, a maître d' at exclusive restaurants. He also had a sister, Irene, who was four years younger

He competed in the 100 and 200 m 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp and won bronze medals in both events. Securing him a spot in British Olympic and black British history.

fast forward a hundred years and meet ...

Are you enjoying the journey? well, the next stop is B which stands for the: Bristol Bus Boycotts

You may recognise the name Rosa Parks; if not, don't worry. We're travelling back in time to 1955.

But in the UK, we had our bus boycott. Let me set the scene just after WWII, people from Africa, the Caribbean, and India were recruited to assist rebuild Britain. They were hired for a variety of jobs, but the problem was that Bristol's major bus company, which was owned by the city council, refused to hire black and Asian drivers solely on the basis of their skin colour.

The manager at the time, Ian Patey said this

"White labour in this city,we intend to go on engaging, white labor, rather than coloured labour"

This type of racial discrimination wasn't even illegal.

Do you remember Rosa Parks? Yeah, she lit another match in the already blazing fire that became the American Civil Rights Movement.

Returning to Bristol, three men were motivated by the changes they saw in the United States. Td he three men were Paul Stephenson, Roy Hackett, and Guy Bailey and they organised the blockade and sit-in protest, which meant that the buses couldn't go across the city where they needed to.

Maybe if i wasn't racist i wouldn't have this issue

this was probably what the bus company's manager was thinking when the buses were being disturbed

If you want to find out more about the Bristol Bus Boycott I would highly suggest this video

Thank you!
