INTRODUCTION:

Religion and culture are just two of the closely related matters in this world but are actually diffrent in nature and definition. There have been several theories suggesting the connection of the two such as religion being the center of culture .However, we can never deny the fact that certain cultures can also be disconnected from any form of religion in a society and there is no question that culture has significant impact on religion beliefs but sometimes those impacts destroy the main pillars of any religion.

Definitions:

Religion:

Religion is the realtionship of every individual to the spiritual things they have regarded as holy and worthy of their highest reverence . It is also considered as the means that brings comfort to the people whenever they deal with the truth of life and death and anything in between.

Culture:

Culture is a way of life of a group of people , the behaviors , beliefs , values, traditions that they accept , generally whithout thinking about them and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next.

THE ASPECTS OF HOW CULTURE AFFECTS ISLAM:

The oppression of women :

Most of the oppression of women by islam and muslims that is highly publicized is usually due to local customs and traditions.

Female genital mutilation :

Female circumcision, the practice or the ritual of cutting or removing some or all of the external female genitalia .FGM is practiced in at least 28 countries of sub-saharan Africa , a few countries in the Middle East and Asia , and among immigrant populations from these countries in Europe , North America and Australia.

Marriage:

Violence of any kind toward women and forcing them against their will for anything is not allowed A muslim marriage is a simple legal agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions .

The misconception of the Quran:

Conclusion

Many traditions , perceptions and practices were added on top of religion and that lead us to learn two important messages or lessons : muslims who want to be loyal to their religion should not cling onto everything culture because maybe some things are bad traditions and they need to be changed , most importantly is to understand that even if we are born muslims we have to find islam ourselves. On the other hand , the westerners who look at islamic culture and see some troubling aspects shoul not readily conclude that this is what islam ordains.
