  • As a leader, you support your team members and therefore also bear a great responsibility when it comes to their career planning and further development.

  • Get clarity about what your team members' short and medium-term career plans look like. You’re their leader, so your opinion will mean a lot to your employee. Therefore, make sure that you are honest and at the same time appreciative of the career ideas that your employee reveals to you.
  • In a situation when a desired career option is not available or you as the leader don’t believe the expectations of your employee are realistic, it may be more motivating to get an honest assessment from you that is well-founded, such as identifying intermediate steps or addressing skills that are not yet strong enough to give the employee the impression that they are not being taken seriously.
