Theorical background

Objective

Theorical background

  • Objective
  • First of all, we wanted to build a place where students who choose to apply to a French university could find useful information in order to facilitate their life in France.
  • Our theoretical research allowed us to discover that international students were often confronted with a language barrier. We also noticed that many websites do not offer a translation of their pages in different languages, or do not allow further research because their links are only in French.
  • Our mission therefore results from these observations, but also from the fact that we know that in order to be able to follow their studies in good conditions, students have to pass the discovery stage to then understand what is expected of them before realizing Tasks. Their social and daily environment must favor it (Erdogan et al., 2015).

Theorical background

Articles and texts on which we base our values

The meeting of at least two people sharing the project

The definition of an object for the association

Our association aims to provide assistance in an informative way to support students coming from abroad but also from Europe and France, as part of their registration at the University or in a higher school and in post-Bac training in France. This informative help takes place on a digital platform where various tools are installed to facilitate evolution on the site.

Theorical background

Each stage of construction of this association was the meeting place between its 5 founding members: Pauline, Alexis, Manon, Julie and Eline.

  • Objective
  • Articles and texts on which we base our values
  • Psychological value

FFT team

The freedom to pool knowledge and activities

Equality of rights and duties for all members

The research carried out by its founding members has enabled everyone to invest in thematic fields of assistance in the organization of student life, whether arrival in France to his daily activities, leisure and training. Everyone sorted and gathered important information, which was then pooled and distributed according to the construction of the help platform

Pedagogy

The association recognizes in its 5 founding members the same rights and duties, but also gives all those who come to request it on the “platform help” the possibility of becoming a member.

Disinterested management

As students of Master 1 science of Education and Training having to carry out a work for the English and TICE Teaching Unit, the founding members have no financial interest in this association.

Theorical background

  • Objective

Here are articles that give voice to what is becoming a student, the transition from secondary to higher education, and this difficult transition that does not necessarily lead to the success of the chosen course. Contribution of ethnomethodology (American sociological current) and psychological point of view to understand the mechanisms of affiliation and becoming a student.

  • First of all, FLE is an acronym meaning Français Langue Etrangère or "French as a Foreign Language". It is mandatory for universities in the Erasmus program to offer FLE classes so you are nearly guaranteed to have classes offered at your university.
  • For exchange students : they are usually offered as a « Free Modules » (UE Libres), integrated into your degree.
  • For international students : those classes can be costly and separate from your degree.
Your FLE tutors Pauline and Manon are here to answer your questions. See to know more

  • So depending on your methodological and academic objectives, your university will provide various types of language courses : intensive internships, support courses, workshops and seminars.
  • Courses correspond to different levels of French proficiency, determined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) :
  • A1: Beginner
  • A2: Elementary
  • B1: Intermediate
  • B2: Upper intermediate
  • C1: Advanced
  • C2: Master/Native

Globals informations and rules

  1. Have some ID with you.
  2. You can wear trainers and whatever clothes you like, unless you are going somewhere smart.
  3. Bouncers in discos are unlikely to let you in if you’re a group of more guys than girls.
  4. If a bouncer says that you or a friend is ‘fatigué’, it means they are too drunk.
  5. Never get in an unlicenced taxi or allow someone you don’t know to drive you back at home, especially if you are drunk, and/or a girl, and/or alone.
  6. Many places will ask to look in your bag or pat you down, so best don’t bring with you prohibited things !
  7. Student parties often take place on Thursday evenings.

Introduction

  • Depending on where you come from and where you end up in France, your outlook on campus life is going to be very different.
  • First of all, if your university of choice has the label Bienvenue en France or "Welcome to France", a certain standard in terms of welcoming international students can be expected of the university.

INTERNAL SUMMARY

How old is your campus?

See here

  • If that is the case, you will find a small library nearby or inside the building, associations and clubs related to classes being held inside the building, a canteen or a CROUS cafeteria if you are lucky but those buildings are usually bare. The rest can be found on the modern campus located elsewhere.
  • Depending if you are on an old campus the city was built around or if the building you have classes in is far from campus, your experience will be different.

Associations and clubs

See here

On campus, you will find many clubs which are called associations. Some focus on student life or alumni life and others on their department topic such as sports, journalism, theater, music, languages but also ecology, solidarity or interculturality. They offer activities all year round such as food and clothes drives but also parties. You can join them to do some volunteer or charity work and even take on roles to help them organise events and workshops around campus. They are a great help to get involved in student life.

They are overseen by the Student Life Office, contact them to know more about associations on your campus.

What you won't find on a French campus

See here

  • There is no residence hall. Find out how to find accommodation
  • There is no real lounging area to speak of : in France, you will not be able to find a recreational area that is managed by the university in itself. There won't be a TV and couches to lounge on. For that, you will have to look towards the associations on campus.
