HOW IS FAMILY DAY IN VIETNAM?
It’s a tradition in Vietnamese culture for many generations of the same family to live under the same roof. Families can derogate a member who’s not providing proper conditions for other household members and also announce their achievements to their community. It’s also a tradition for the older male to be the head of the household and children are educated from a young age on ‘filial piety’ — which means that younger members of the family should treat older members with respect and care.
HISTORY OF VIETNAM'S FAMILY DAY!

Vietnam is a country that is very connected to its core cultural values, based mainly on ‘Confucianism’ — which means that Vietnamese people are big fans of respect, education, harmony, and loyalty to family. In western countries, there’s a tendency toward individualism, while in eastern countries — such as Vietnam — the trend is to see family as a unit in itself. Children are expected to look after their parents, besides treating them with uttermost respect. There’s also an expectation for all members of the family to provide for the household.
WHEN IS IT FIRST CELEBRATED
28
To keep these cultural aspects alive in the mind of the people of Vietnam, in 2001, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem promulgated the Vietnamese Family Day, which is to be celebrated every year on June 28. On this day families from all around the country gather to celebrate, whether it be at home or at festivals downtown.
WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?
Family is a very important aspect of our lives. There’s no better way to celebrate it than to have a whole day dedicated to it!
It’s important to always keep unity in every aspect of our lives. This holiday is important because it keeps that idea alive in the heart of every person in Vietnam!
Gratitude and appreciation for the individuals in our lives can go a long way toward maintaining healthy family ties. Rather than dwelling on previous disappointments and problems, we can foster deeper feelings of appreciation and love by recognizing the ways family members have been there for us.
MEANINGS OF VIETNAM FAMILY DAY
1. an important milestone, reminding everyone to cherish family love by concrete actions
2. opportunity for each of us to remember and see how many good deeds we have done in the past year
3. contributing to enhancing the traditional cultural values of the family
4. It is a favorable condition for families to reunite, celebrate, and share joys and sorrows with each other after a year of hard work and difficulties in life
ACTIVITIES IN FAMILY DAY
Usually, each locality has exciting activities to celebrate this holiday.
There are many activities taking place on family holidays. Activities are very well received by the Vietnamese people. Activities are usually held on Vietnam Family Day, such as: Exhibitions, seminars, seminars, contests, health counseling and cultural and artistic exchanges. ‘Specifically, the photo exhibitions ’‘Fountain of Love’‘, the book exhibition ’‘Family reading - bonding love’‘; seminar ’‘Family health care’‘; free counseling and health care for the elderly;... took place very actively and excitingly.’
1.Get outside. 2.Play a board game. 3. Have a sock ball fight. 4. Get crafty. 5. Have a camp-out/pj day in the living room. 6. Make a play. 7.Take family pictures.
However, from 2020 with the appearance of the Covid 19 complex epidemic, these activities have been suspended on Family Day. Some activities have been switched to Online such as painting contests "My family join hands to repel Covid-19", housewife contest - family dishes... posted on social networks. Many people responded to participate. Spread the positive spirit of family to everyone.
In addition, in families, we have activities organized at home, gather together with family meals, small parties dedicated to family members to celebrate this meaningful holiday.
Thanks for watching! :)
