You are invited as a team to design and facilitate a training. Please Follow some steps to create a draft concepT.

Choose the context

Well done!

The initial situation is chosen, let's start with discussing te general frame of the training: the environment, the theme, the group and you as facilitator.

BRIEFLY DISCUSS (OR DESCRIBE) YOUR CONTEXT ACCORDING TO THE TCI MODEL

THE GROUP

Individual: his/her expectations, wishes, thoughts, feelings, experience

relationships, interactions, group dynamics process

Well done!

Take the next step and try to formulate specific goals for the participants for the entire learning event.

Try to imagine one sample participant before and after the learning event. What kind of skills, knowledge, changes in attitude will the meeting foster?

Before

After

What does she/he know? What knowledge does she/he need?

What knowledge will she/he gain?

What skills will she/he develop?

What skills does she/he have and what does she/he need?

What changes in the attitude can be observed after the meeting?

Attiutude before the meeting.

An example of goals formulated for the facilitator qualification at the Horizontal School

1. Participants know theoretical foundations of pedagogy and adult learning 2. PTs are able to design a meaningful holistic learning processes 3. PTs know concrete tools for planning and structuring educational events 4. PTs know how to work in a facilitators’ team in a constructive way and develop a feedback culture 5. PTs got familiar with group dynamics and how to adjust methods to the respective atmosphere in the group or react to changes adequately

Your goal is ready and the topic is set. Brainstorm on the content that you want to address as part of the training. See an example below.

Models

Non-violent communication, empathy, dialogue, storytelling

Well done!

The goals and content are set. Now let's put it all together and create a run sheet according to the Goal-Content-Method model.

An example of a 1,5 h session designed according to the goal-content-method model

Cultural dimensions (Geert Hofstede, my personal attitude, dealing with time, hierarchy, individualism/collectivism, differences in rules when it comes to teamwork, needs and feelings when tensions occur

Diversity in practice: Participants experienced working in an intercultural team and what challenges may arise. They reflected on the personal approach to rules, relation to time, hierarchy and other dimensions of culture.

1. Big room for 25 people2. 5 tables 3. Chairs for everyone 4. 25 copies of individual assessment sheets

1. Game: Role the dice2. Debriefing and discussion after the game 3. Individual assessment according to 4 ccultural dimensions

Step 4: Plan materials needed

Step 3: decide on the method

Step 2: choose the content

Step 1: set a goal for the session

Well done!

The draft concept is created. Now have a look at your draft and check if it ensures holistic learning experience.

Check if your meeting will be a holistic learning experience

Is there a good mix of methods fostering: cognitive, emotional and practical learning?

Is there a space for inhale and exhale during the meeting?

Are the methods diverse enough?

Well done!

Your draft concept is ready! Next you prepare the methods. Then you meet the group of participants and the process of group dynamics starts. Enjoy!
