What is
There are three different types of metamemory: belief, procedural and declarative.Belief metamemory focuses on knowledge, ideas, judgements and our social cognition. Procedural metamemory focuses on how good the memory performs, and therefore how much we can rely on it. Procedural metamemory also can be divided into to sections: control and monitoring. The control aspect includes the planning we put in: our selection of information leading onto the decisions we make. The monitoring aspect is our self-
assessment: how well did we handle the situation and how well did our judgements translate into real life? Finally, declarative metamemory focuses on evaluating the concepts of memory. This is split into three sections: the knowledge of the content, the knowldege of the task and the conditional knowledge. The knowledge of the content involves undersatnding the content that is in relation to the task. The knowledge of the task is to understand why we want to achieve, initiate or pursue this task. Conditional knowledge is what is required to achieve optimum performance.
metamemory?
and how does it work?
To understand metamemory, we must first look at metacognition. Metacognition is knowing about knowing, and metamemory is a subset of metacognition. Instead of knowing, metamemory is thinking abou thinking.
Quirky little fact
According to research, metamemory typically appears around children at 4 to 5 years old, when they understand the concept of time a little better and learn future tense.
