A multiple choice question (MCQ) is an assessment item consisting of a stem, which poses the question or problem, followed by a list of possible responses, also known as options or alternatives.

Characteristics

  • The proximity of options increases the rigour of the question.
  • The number of incorrect options increases rigour.
  • Incorrect options should be plausible but ambiguously wrong.
  • Multiple correct options make a question mor rigorous.
  • The occasional negative question encourages students to read the questions more carefully.
  • In most cases includes a structured answer sheet.
