IS THERE A RACE DISPARITY IN STOP AND SEARCH(DRUGS) FOR YOUNG BLACK AND WHITE MALES IN THE UK ?
START
WHY I CHOSE THIS TOPIC?
- the death of cris kabba and george floyd sparked my interest of exploring the issues within the policing system and judicial system
- Since i plan to study law at university i felt that it would be more fitting to focus the uk side of law , since it may help me next year
- In addition, i found it facinating that policing issues andand the system itself in the the uk media was not adressesed as much compared to american media
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Aims - to investigate if there is a race disparity in stop and search between white and black young men in the uk - Investigate the causes of discparity and improvements objectives: - look through various sources that play a factor in the issue Read 2 plus articles a week ad condense into key information
PROJECT OUTLIne
what is stop and search ?
Stop and search powers are police interventions to keep people safe. They are used to address drug offences, burglary, theft and terrorism. They allow police officers to search you or your vehicle if they have reasonable grounds to do so. They must use the search powers fairly, responsibly and with respect for people.

racial profiling in the met police
The same number of white and Black Londoners, 508 each, were sentenced in this category from July to December 2019 – already an overrepresentation of Black people. But the Met’s press team made this disparity nearly twice as bad again, putting out 33 press releases on Black people, and just 17 on white people. march 2022 - black school girl strip searched while on her period keith hinds - 2007 - hnds took legal action against the british traport police claiming the imprisonment ad malicious procescution that he had witnesseed a young black man being stop and eachered at the seven sisters startion .he observed and was arrentrd and charge for 'abusve behaviour '
- 14 year old schoolboy who was accused by the metropoliyne pof racist targeting after claiming he has been stopped by police about 30 times in the last two years. The boy, who lives in south London with his 41-year-old mother, stated that’ he has been stopped and searched so many times by the police that he has become fearful of leaving home’.
government action
- Throughout history it can be seen that police powers have gradually increased ...- sus laws margret thatcher - brixton riots- stephen lawrence inquiriy 1999 report and scarman report in 1984 -
-Under Blair's government, the amount of new legislation increased, which attracted criticism- anti social behaviour order 1998 -Removal of restrictions of section 60 and policing bill - priti patel
THE MEDIA
- The media has played a crucial part in racial profiling where the majority of stop and search victims are predominantly black ,especially young black people .
- Journalists are completely ignorant and unaware about the influence that they have on the media as editors no longer have the resources to send reporters to court on a regular basis .
- This leads to them being heavily reliant upon the convenient write-ups of court proceedings, convictions and sentencings that are handed freely by the police themselves ,Where the process of how journalists
- choose what cases to publicise are ones that are headline grabbers and don't paint the entire story fairly
- This shows that there is a disparity in stop and search as data is erased of white victims and a higher percentage of media coverage shown by the Mirror ,which featured the largest number of news items about young men and boys overall (16.7%), followed by The Sun (15.8%).
- Of the Sunday newspapers, the News of the World featured the most articles about young men and boys with 4 percent of the total national newspaper coverage, followed by the Sunday Mirror (2.5%) .
- showing us that mainstream media has a huge influence is racial profiling despite police and the public being aware it
- This means that either subconsciously or consciously a picture is clearly painted in the minds of the public and will be stated to the police which continues the never ending cycle of harassment and abuse of power teens experience .
human rights
pressure groups e.g liberty ,stop watch and unjust play a huge part in human rights issues focused towards the government
-May 2022 - u turn of section 60 u -turn
In July 2021 the Home Secretary Priti Patel announced the decision to scrap the Section 60 (S60) safeguards in the Best Use of Stop and Search Scheme (BUSSS). The safeguards were first introduced in 2014 by then Prime Minister Theresa May in a bid to address the high levels of racial disproportionality in stop and search, which is most acute under S60 suspicionless stop and search. The safeguards were removed from the BUSSS on 27 July 2021. In the legal action Liberty and StopWatch warned that the move to scrap the safeguards was unlawful and sent a worrying message about the Home Secretary’s indifference to systemic police racism, and the very high levels of racial disproportionality in police use of stop and search.
lessons i have earned
- planning step by step makes the research process easier
- How to search for key content and information from large documents
- Writing style and writing in a clear and conserve way
Its okay if ur project plan isnt completely aligned with ur deadines
- When planning be realistic as you have three aevels to balance aswell
difficulties US
successes
- topic issues - went from sentecing disparities in the uk to stop and seeach and wasnt sure if i ws going to do a comparative study between the us and uk
- acsessing resources - e.g some really detailed articles were unfortanately only accesible through payment or specific universities
- going off topic - there were times were i looked into research that didnt relate specifically to the question
- structure and referencing
- accuracy and bias of artices and work
- not two sided argument
- topic is interseting therefore i was motivated to continue research
- this issue has alt of branches to answr the qurstion e.g human rights , society , the government (factors )
- i feel more confident in approaching future projects like this at university
- i was able to use a variety of sources to evaluate my qustion
if you are black, you are at least six times as
likely to be stopped and searched by the police in England and Wales
as a white person.
There were 7.5 stop and searches for every 1,000 white people, compared with 52.6 for every 1,000 black people
there were 69.5 stop and searches for every 1,000 black people in London, compared with 28.8 per 1,000 black people in the rest of England and Wales
how will my project impact the future
- news channels and media outlets will reflect and hold themselves accountable for racial profiling and not properly educating the public - government can review recent judicial laws towards police powers and weaken or stip thhem entirely - the supreme court can hold the government accountable through scruitny - the met police can review tactics and hire better pr teams and communicate with the public
