What is MTI?
Mother-tongue interference refers to the influence of the native language of the learner on her/his acquisition of the target language (Contrastive analysis, 2015).
Effects of MTI
1. Lack of confidence
2. Inability to speak in the proper accent
3. Slow growth in career/academic
4. Miscommunication
(Ramkumar & Vani,2020)
Causes of MTI
The variables in mother tongue that hinder effective communication in English are caused by differences in phonetics (Kelly, 2004).
Causes of MTI
Pronunciation teaching: “Firstly it tends to be neglected.
When it is not neglected, it tends to be reactive to a particular problem that has arisen in the classroom rather than being strategically planned” (Kelly, 2004).
Causes of MTI
Avery & Ehrlich (1992) stated that the sound features of the learners' first language are transferred into the target language which results in mispronunciation.
Eg: /s/ and /z/ Please and Pleg /f/ and /p/ photo and foto
Causes of mti
1. Grammar Translation Method of Teaching
2. Bilingual Method of Teaching
3. Lack of Audio- Visual aids
4. Lack of Attention
5. Lack of exposure
Causes of mti
6. Lack of feedback
7. Lack of Practice
8. Problems related to Stress
9. Over Generalization
Bhutanese English
Many Bhutanese villages are isolated, so many indigenous languages are thriving. Though most students who attend school learn to speak, read, and write in English, students return home to speak their native tongue. As a result, there are many different variations of Bhutanese-English pronunciation.
