FDR's New deal

Main Objective of the New Deal

  • From 1933-1939 - FDR looked to provide economic relief and aid in an effort to stabilize the economy
  • Focused on reforms of industry, agriculture, finance, waterpower, labor, housing and government activities
  • Opposite of traditional laissez-faire "hands off" approach by government

First 100 Days

POST-100 Days

  • 1st 3 months in office - focused on alleviating suffering of the unemployed
  • Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
    • Aimed to dispense emergency and short-term aid
    • Temporary jobs, construction projects, youth work in national forests
  • Post-1935, New Deal looked to revive industrial activity
    • National Recovery Administration (NRA) - focused on trade practices, wages, hours, child labor, collective bargaining
    • Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) & Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) - establish financial stability & avoid insecurity

"Fireside Chats" & Eleanor Roosevelt

2nd New Deal & Legacy

  • Focused on relief, recovery & reform
  • Looked to increase agricultural prices, remain in homes, create long-term employment
  • Legacy - Real GDP recovered within 10% by 1941 before WW2 spending
  • Believed to be part of Socialism
  • President Truman reassured many of the New Deal Programs with his Fair Deal programs
  • "Fireside Chats" - 1933-1944 a series of radio broadcasts meant to gain support for the "New Deal" and establish reassurance
  • Eleanor Roosevelt - Went on tours to provide intel on conditions, programs and public opinions
