MANLEY WEST(group 5)

We are overwhelmed with humility and gratitude to all those who have assisted us in putting these concepts, which are much above the level of simplicity, into something concrete. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our teacher, Ms. Thompson for providing us with the excellent opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic Famous Biologists, with a main focus on Professor Manley West, which also assisted us in conducting extensive research and learning about many new things. We are quite grateful to them. Most of all, we'd like to give God our greatest thanks and appreciation for we could not have done anything without him.

Professor West studied at Kingston then Thames High School in Surrey, London, after finishing his secondary education at Titchfield High School. He subsequently attended the University of London. It was then that he pursued his aim of becoming a pharmacologist. In 1967, he graduated from the University of London with a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology.

Throughout his academic career, he was primarily engaged in medicinal herb research. This resulted in the development of marijuana-derived medicines Canasol and Asmasol for the treatment of glaucoma and asthma, respectively. His students are all aware of the inspiration that led to the creation of Canasol. On his return from England, he purchased fishing boats, and the fishermen on his boats informed him that fishing at night was made easier by the better vision from smoking marijuana, so Professor West set out to discover the source of this observation.

Professor West was a strong advocate for advancement through education and he provided valuable mentorship to both students and staff. He provided great council for both the young and old. One of his popular sayings was “If you don’t use it, you’re going to lose it.”Professor West treated everyone respectfully and always found time to sit and talk with his staff members and students. He always kept crackers in his office for sharing with all who would sit with him and of course there would be an offer of a drink of tea, water or his favourite, Sancrista cream Sherry.Professor Manley West has left a lasting legacy. Those who were inspired by him will remember him fondly.
