The message
and the context of the song
The context
- "Parents" originally titled "Parents Ain't Always Right" was inspired by a trans girl that Yungblud met in Bonner Springs, Kansa.
- " She'd been through so much difficulties but just said that: “it all makes who I am. I’m just me and I like what I like’." "
#individualism
#freeteens
" This song is literally a tribute to individualism. A statement saying that no one, except yourself, can dictate what is right for you and your life and who you should be. "
YUNGBLUD
The message
Conveyed by the singer
- The premise of the song is to call out immoral and uncaring adult figures who manipulate and abuse the younger generation.
- It also communicates a hopeful message in stating that by coming together and recognizing the faults in those with power over them, the younger generation will survive and be able to fight back.
Lyrics
- Rebellion towards the older generation is a common theme in YUNGBLUD’s songs. He confronts the government, parents, and other controlling people/factors of his life, often talking about how they don’t accept the change time brings along
- YUNGBLUD addresses a common phrase said by parents:
- I’m your mom/dad/parent, I am right.
- Their beliefs and thoughts are often based on very dated discoveries or religion
SOng teasers & lyrics
- To promote the song, YUNGBLUD set up a phone number on posters for fans to find and call the number each day for three days to hear different stories through voicemail, each story narrated by Harrison and relating to a lyric in "parents".
- These three stories are about homosexuality (gun), adult jealousy (teacher) and unloved childs getting killed by there parents (toaster in the bath).
