Authentic and non-authentic materials National open and distance university UNAD Material Design October 7, 2022 Jessica Lorena Tobón

I think the most important principles are:

  • The opportunity to interact in the L2 is central to developing L2 proficiency.
  • Instruction needs to take account of individual differences in learners.
  • The selection, ordering, presentation and assessment of the material should be based on a careful consideration of the learners and their needs, the teaching conditions, and the time and resources available.

In your opinion what are the most important principles in materials development?

  • As much as possible, the learners should be interested in and excited about learning the language, and they should come to value this learning.
  • Learners should process the items to be learned as deeply and as thoughtfully as possible.
  • Materials should achieve impact.
  • Materials should take into account that learners differ in learning styles.
  • Materials should maximize learning potential by encouraging intellectual, aesthetic and emotional involvement which stimulates both right and left-brain activities.

For me, the most important principles in the development of materials are these because they demonstrate and give an approach to what is desired to be achieved with their use at the time of teaching, where good instruction is sought with these, that there is learning with opportunities of interaction with the L2 for its domain. Likewise, because knowing and understanding the differences of the students, their needs is a fundamental part for the design of the material and knowing what means and resources are available to use for their teaching, understanding and acquisition of knowledge, where at the same time the student can feel attracted to learn the language and its elements used in teaching, that these be of impact, that draw their attention and they can participate, develop skills from reading, listening, speaking and writing, in order to stimulate their abilities, where As a teacher, you should emphasize and take into account that every student does not acquire knowledge or understand in the same way.

What are authentic materials? Name at least 5 examples of authentic materials.

Authentic materials are materials that are aimed at the everyday life of native speakers and are not intended for didactic purposes. are materials that expose the real world and how it is used in the target language, reflect the naturalness of the language, activate the motivation of the students, contain cultural content and improve communicative competence. Some examples of authentic materials are magazines, maps, news, songs, and movies.

Inauthentic materials are didactic materials manufactured and designed solely for instructional purposes. These materials are planned, designed and produced based on the curriculum and policy of each country.

  •  They are designed by the teacher according to the ability and language level of the students.
  •  It is easier for the student to master the lesson.
  •  Are more culturally appropriate for students.
  •  They are simpler and more appropriate for the context and language level of the students.

non-authentic materials

Disadvantages:

  •  Being designed and simplified by the masters, it makes them look unnatural.
  •  Simplified textbooks and learning materials give a lack of exposure to the actual use of the English language in daily life.
  •  The simplification of non-authentic teaching materials is sometimes not in accordance with the culture of the country.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials in the classroom?

Disadvantages:

  • Unedited are too difficult for students to understand.
  • Frustration in students because they do not understand the words while working in the classroom.
  • Are less interesting to students

Advantages:
