MODULE 14: My Story - My Community and I
My Story
"My onion" - exercise
Next
This exercise can be done even in the first meeting in a group and is an awareness of each participant that it belongs to several levels, social structures (family, work community, local community, nation etc.)
Unit 14.6: Drama exercises for growing the individual spirit of a community belonging
The moderator offers each participant a big piece of paper and colored markers to draw a multi-layered onion. Each participant must represent him/her- self inside the onion and working towards the onion must present the family she/he belongs to, the community, the work team, the region, and the country. Representation can be done with the help of drawings or with the help of words (or with a combination of the two). At the end of the allowed time, each participant comes in front of the group and presents her/his individual "onion".
Next
Remarks:
- even if it is a time-consuming exercise, it is beneficial for each participant to have the opportunity to present himself to the others;
- it is recommended that the moderator does not offer the possibility to ask additional questions. Each participant reveals details about their own life as much as they consider to be in a safe territory (if questions are asked of each participant, he or she may be considered assaulted by the others);
- a less time-consuming way is at the end of the allowed time (when each participant drew their own "onion") to make a wall exhibition with these drawings and to give a few minutes to all participants to contemplate the existing "onions“.

"Balance" - "Giving and taking" exercise
Each participant will receive a large sheet of paper and markers and will have to draw four different balances on each page.The first balance will represent the relationship of each participant with her/himself.The second balance will represent the relationship of each participant with the family to which she/he belongs.The third balance will represent the relationship of each participant with the work team of which she/he is part.The fourth balance will represent the relationship of each participant with the local community of which she/he is part.
Next
It is an exercise of individual awareness of the relationship: what it offers me…, my family..., the community… and what I give in return to the family, and community….
Next
It is an exercise of awareness that the individual balance must pursue in life for a harmonious life in which personal stories contribute to the development and not to imbalance (see balances).
