A ratio is used to compare quantities
Simplying Ratios You simplify a ratio by cancelling common factors. Examples 15 : 10 6: 2: 4 10p : £1 10g : 1kg 2hours : 20minutes
Another way to simplify ratios is to write them in the form 1 : n, where n is a number Example Write down the following ratios in the form 1: n 2: 6 7: 35 6: 24 2: 1
Dividing in a Given ratio. Ratio can be used to divide an amount into two or more shares. We tend to use the word Share, Split or Divide
1st Example Share £20 in the ratio 2: 3 1. Add the ratios 2+3 = 5 ( we have 5 parts) 2. Divide £20 divided by 5 = £4 ( the value of one part is £4) 3. Multipy 2 x £4 = £8 3 x 4 = £12 £8 : £12
2nd Example Split £50 in the ratio 1 : 4 Add the ratios 1 + 4 = 5 ( we have 5 parts) Divide £50 divided by 5 = £10 ( the value of one part is £10) Multiply 1 x £10 = £10 4 x £10 = £40 £10 : £40
