Brute Force

Cracking Passwords

Brute Force

A brute force attack is more dangerous when the attacker has information about you which could make up parts of your password. As the password's length increases, the amount of time, on average, to find the correct password increases exponentially.

A brute force attack consists of an attacker attempting many different passwords with the goal to crack the right password to enter into an account.A brute force can be more efficient when used with a dictionary of common passwords.

How to secure passwords from a brute force attack

Using a long password will exponentially increase the time in takes for the attacker to crack the password. Using special characters also helps. Avoid using common words or common number sequences. Brute force can be made less effective by obfuscating passwords (making them easy for computers to understand but hard for humans) - this would increase the time the attacker takes to check each password The system can also be designed to limit the attemps the passwords have within a period of time.
