The beginning

Formerly know as Visual Communications Film Fest was established in 1983 under Linda Mabalot's leadership, a Filipino American filmmaker and community activist. Mabalot was known for encouraging support of young, up-and-coming Asian Pacific American filmmakers at the beginning of their careers. The program initially consists of 20 films and now known as the biggest film festival in Southern California, screening more than 150 films, mediworks, centerpiece presentations, panel discussions, workshops and special events. Originally an annual weekend series, the LAAPFF has evolved into an annual showcase for the best films and documentaries produced by Asian Pacific and Asian international media that attracts entertainment celebrities, civic and community leaders, industry professionals, and film enthusiasts to celebrate the achievements of Asian Pacific cinematic artists.

First time in the history of the festival, Grand Jury Awards will be awarded in the short and feature-length narrative and documentary categories, partly as a recognition of the dramatic increase in the quality of Asian American feature-length films produced in recent years

LAAPFF has been granted $5000 USD by the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for long-term project assurance.

The Honda Motor Company becomes the first Presenting Sponsor of the Film Festival and continues to be so through 2008.

Among the highlights of the 32nd Festival were action, diversity, and inclusivity.

APA Visionaries Short Film Competition was established by HBO to provide Asian and Pacific Islander filmmakers with a platform to share their unique perspectives. Winners are awarded a cash prize and the film selected will premiere at LAAPFF and have the opportunity to be screened on HBO Platforms.

Featuring a new VR documentary series focusing on women's perspectives of places, this is the festival's first VR presentation. Due to the popularity of one of the VR documentary series 'Walking with Grace, it got featured in FOX News channel 11.

"2018 has been a long and tedious year for many communities, ridden with what seems like never ending attacks on basic human rights. Now more than ever, the Film Festival has been a critical space for people of color, LGBTQ folks, and other marginalized communities to come together, resist, and find healing through visual media."

This year's Festival Centerpiece, IN THE LIFE OF THE MUSIC, was the Festival's first Cambodian-produced film. The film portrays the resilience of the Cambodian community in the face of intergenerational trauma.

Among the winning films at the festival is Call Her Ganda by Director PJ Raval, which points out the disproportionate violence against transgender communities while providing a historical context about American imperialism.

2022

The Hong Kong Economic And Trade Office, San Francisco (HKETO) sponsored, one-day showcase and uplifts Hong Kong's impact on audiences worldwide, with a focus on the diverse storytelling talents from Hong Kong.

The festival, which is presented every year by Visual Communications, will have both in-person programming and virtual options for viewers to experience from the comfort of their own homes.

It is supported by large corporations such as Comcast NBCUniversal, HBO Max and Pacific Islanders In Communications, as well as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Media

Content creation for the festival this year revolves around representation, authorship, responsibility, and ethics.
