Ancient Olympic Games

The first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were in 776 BC. They lasted for approximately 1000 years. Then in 394 AD they were banned by the Roman Emperor, Theodosius. He forbade any pagan festivals, which included the Olympic Games. The Games were held in Olympia. A village in a sacred fertile valley, approximately 500 km south west of Mount Olympus, after which it is named. Originally, organised as a religious, sporting and cultural festival, the Ancient Olympic Games were held in honour of Zeus, the father of the gods. The Ancient Greeks believed that both the body and mind needed discipline. They believed that those who practiced this discipline could best honour Zeus. The perfect human would come from a “marriage of mind and muscle”. The name “Olympic” is derived from Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods. The Games of Olympia were held in honour of Zeus. They were held every four years. This time span has become known as an Olympiad. Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete. For centuries Greece was divided into independent states. These states were often at war with one another. However, during the Olympic festival there was a guaranteed official truce, called the Ekecheiria. This allowed athletes to travel safely from their cities, across the Greek Empire, to take part in the Games. A violation of this truce was punishable by death. And yes they had to compete naked!!!!

THE BIRTH OF THE NEW GAMES

It was Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France who dreamt up this ambitious project. Coubertin decided to create the modern Olympics and founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 in Paris. The first modern Olympic Games in 1896 featured many references to the original Greek Games They were held in Athens as a reminder that the Olympic Games originated in Greece. Most of the sports on the programme of the ancient Olympic Games were echoed in the modern Games. The organisers even went as far as to invent the marathon. De Coubertin liked the way that sport was organised in Britain and visited lots of events including the Henley Regatta He believed that the games would promote world peace and harmony as seen in his quote which is still displayed on the scoreboards at each games. “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part. Just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle” The IOC which was originally chosen by the Baron is now huge and has representatives from all the countries who take part. They decide where the games will take part and chose the city 6 years before the event.

There are many different kinds of sports that are undertaken by a wide variety of different people. Some people do sport for their career and other people purely do sport for enjoyment and recreation. Some sports, like cricket, require the use of a lot of equipment, while others need very little in order to successfully play a game in that sport. Some people use public playing fields to play sport for free, while other sports such as squash, tennis, badminton and table tennis are usually paid for on an hourly basis in the comfort of a local leisure centre. Most sports are played with a round object often known as a ball. Some sports use more than one ball and snooker is one of the unique sports that make use of a number of balls while being played. The game itself is often controlled by an impartial individual known as an umpire in cricket and a referee in sports like football and rugby. Most sports have a duration of not more than a few hours, however some athletic tournaments can last for up to a week and a game of cricket can be five days in duration before a winner is announced. Some people prefer to watch sport. This can either be done by going to a stadium, a local leisure centre, park or on the television. It is often cheaper to watch sport from the comfort of a person’s home than to visit the stadium or a special event. Some sports, such as football and cricket, are really popular in the United Kingdom but not in the USA. In the USA people often play basketball and baseball. However, most countries put aside time to compete in world sporting events such as the football world cup or the Olympics, which occur every four years.Nowadays, people who suffer from any kind of disability are also encouraged to participate in sport and most sport equipment is adapted to suit the needs of a disabled person. This means sport is something that can be enjoyed no matter the physical ability of the person. The para-olympics takes place a week after the main event and it is equally popular. Participation in sporting activity is encouraged by doctors and at schools given the beneficial impact it has on the health of the individual that participates, and it is for this reason and the competitive nature of individuals that sport remains a very popular activity worldwide.

I was never a sporty kid and I never liked PE classes at school. But as I got older, I realized that I needed some physical activity to keep fit and stay healthy. That’s why, I took up running, especially after my friends told me that it’s something everyone could do and enjoy. I know that a lot of people say it’s not for them and that they drop out after one month. But I decided to stick to my plan of two months and to give myself some time to get used to running. I was really determined and I went running every two days. I remembered to warm up before each run and I was running, and therefore working out, for at least 30 minutes each time. After six months, I was so keen on my new sports activity that I decided to take part in the Wings for Life World Run. On the day of the run, I felt well-prepared and was full of energy. Unfortunately, it was very hot outside and the run turned out to be very difficult for me. I did my best, even though I couldn’t keep up with the other runners. After one hour, the Wings for Life car approached me and I was knocked out of the competition. It was my first race and I was really happy that I had done it. Although I didn’t achieve as much as I’d hoped, I didn’t give up running. The result? I have been practising over the last ten years. Can you imagine?

Skiing

Vocabulary and reading tasks

Skiing When we talk about skiing, we generally mean Alpine (also named downhill) skiing. That is, when we use fixed bindings attached to the skis at both the toe and the heel of the skier’s boots to travel downwards over snow in cold mountains. However, there is another type of skiing called Nordic skiing. It uses fixed-toe but free-heel bindings. Skiing, similarly to so many other sports, started at pre-historic ages, though its concept was rather different from today’s idea of a sport activity. From about 2500 BC, when the first primitive skis were made in Hoting, Sweden, people have used skis to hunt more effectively for animals, to perform military manoeuvres or to transport themselves in the snow. Nowadays this has completely changed to an outdoor activity in winter. The word “ski” comes from the Old Norse word “skio” which translates as piece of wood. “Slalom” also originates from Norwegian, which means tracking down the slope. How is this possible? Let’s see the different opportunities awaiting us up in the snowy mountains! Alpine skiing: This – probably the most popular type of skiing – was born in the European Alps. Its purpose is to ski down the hill by fixed heels and toes, commonly with a pair of ski poles. Once you have skied down using proper body balance, some lifts next to the ski pistes (or trails, tracks) on the ridges transport you up the mountain to the peak. Lift types can include aerial tramways, funitels, gondola lifts, telemixes, chairlifts, t-bars, platter lifts and funiculars. There are four types of pistes, according to their level of difficulty. The easiest is the green trail, especially designed for complete beginners. They usually use the wedge technique to ski down. The blue piste is for beginners and pre-intermediate skiers with slopes covered by even snow. They apply the technique of parallel skiing with short and long turns. The red serves the needs of intermediate skiers with experience in edge skiing carving turns. This trail contains icy slopes too. In the USA, it is called diamond. The most difficult piste is the black (or double diamond in the USA) with steep icy slopes and bumps for advanced skiers.

Skiing gear: Always get informed about the weather when you go skiing. Frequently, it can be cold, snowy and windy at the top of the mountain, but sunny and warm in the valley, or perhaps the other way round. To prepare for these weather conditions, dressing in layers is vital. That way, you can remove a layer if it gets warm, but the layers trap the air in-between if it is freezing cold. There are some necessary clothes and accessories besides the basic equipment. For example, the goggles will keep the snow out of your eyes and prevent “snow blindness”, and by wearing a hat, the heat will not get lost through your head. Here is what you may need: - skis - helmet - ski poles - ski gloves or mittens - ski boots - wind stopper hat - ski binding - wind stopper headband - ski bag - insulated and waterproof ski jacket - goggles - insulated and waterproof ski pants - ski socks - soft shell jacket - mid-layer - long underwear

Sports Injury Knowledge More than one million sports injuries occur each year1 costing the community an estimated 10 million dollars a year. Approximately 30-50% of these injuries could potentially be prevented . Common Injuries The most common types of injuries. These are: ƒ Muscle strains or tears ƒ Bruising ƒ Ligament sprains or tears ƒ Broken bones Other injuries range from dislocations to concussion. Types of Injuries by Cause Sports injuries are usually categorised according to the cause of injury, either direct, indirect or from overuse. The three different types of injuries are characterised as a: Direct Injury: An injury that is likely to be a result of contact with another player, object or the ground. E.g. Contused (corked) thigh Indirect Injury: An injury that is likely to be a result of physical impact without contact, i.e. straining a muscle from movement while running. E.g. Hamstring strain Overuse Injury: An injury that is likely to be a result of continual impact on tendon or bone leading to detrimental wear and tear and therefore high risk of injury.

Complete the gaps with suitable symptoms and causes

Sports injuries can be prevented by looking at the following three categories: 1) The environment of a particular sport 2) Fitness levels 3) Protective wear.

TOTAPS

Assessing injuries with TOTAPS Injury management involves identifying an injury, treating it and then returning to the sport. It’s extremely important that sports players are adequately rehabilitated before returning to sport. If they are not, the injury can become much worse. For serious sports injuries, always get help first! For all other sports injuries, remember TOTAPS to assess.
