Functional dysphagia

Causes

Neurological conditions (ex. Multiple sclerosis), structural abnormalities, strokes, cancer (of the head and neck). Visceral hypersensitivity, hypervigilance or inflammation of the esophagus.

Signs and symptoms

Visible : Structural abnormalities, drooling. Physical: motor disorders, chest pain. Sensation: Reflux hypersensitivity. Pain and inability to swallow. Some people even experiment a sensation of a lump or foreign body in the throat. Mental: Anxiety and depression

Treatment

(Each treatment Is unique to each patient) Medication, Psychotherapy or behavioral therapy, Chewing and swallowing therapy, relaxation therapy.
