Imagine the top piece of your sandwich as the signal phrase which introduces or "signals" the evidence. You can identify the author and their credentials or even the title of the source.
Now think of the "filling" - be it peanut butter, cold cuts, vegetables - as your evidence for your sub claim. The evidence should certainly be introduced properly and accompanied by a transition.
Finally, the bottom piece of bread is where synthesis takes place - this is the discussion portion. The writer must explain why the evidence supports the sub claim as well as the overall position in the central claim.
Sandwiches typically have more than one "filling" so imagine the lettuce on this sandwich as the analysis. Analysis is where the writer breaks down the evidence - essentially explains parts that are important.
