Defining Postmodernism & Social Constructionism
Social Constructionism
POstmodernism
- Social construction describes how we learn about the world around us and that this world is defined through language and conversation with others.
- Schwandt (2003), states that the constructionist view of the truth and knowledge is created.
- Reality is our everyday life. Our everyday life is influenced by our environment.
- Social construction and postmodernism help mental health workers understand that every family and every individual is different, which means therapy and the road to recovery will look vastly different from one another.
- According to Dickerson (2010), postmodernism is an approach that emphasizes "multiplicity: multiple views, multiple possibilities, and multiple lives" (pg. 354).
- The primary assumption of postmodernism is that humans view the world in various ways. There is no one way of thinking. Reality is not objective. Norms, values, and ways of thinking are influenced by the dominant voice in society.

Personal Responsibility and Commitment
Recommendations
Clinicians can work to be more conscious of context and power by making their practice more client-centered. Asking the client genuine questions to better understand something could benefit both parties. First the clinician can gain knowledge from their client specifically and the client can see this as the clinician taking interest in getting to know them better and their experience on an individual level. Clinicians could also take workshops and courses to help expand their knowledge on topics or cultures they do not know much about. Clinicians could also work on being more in the present moment with their clients to actively listen to their clients, and they could do this through daily rituals such as going for walks, meditation, journaling, etc.
