WHAT ARE COMPLETION ITEMS

Completion items

Completion items are a type of short answer question. In completion items, learners are required to insert a word, or words, to complete a sentence, or a series of sentences.

TYPES OF COMPLETION ITEMS

• Several word answer
• Blank space at the end
• Answer a question
• Sentence completion

Examples of completion items

1. A person who writes a story or a book is called a(an) ___________

While completion items may be used to assess different types of skills and knowledge, they are generally used to test basic knowledge.

Advantages of Completion items

• Provides a wide sampling of content.
• Efficiently measures lower levels cognitive ability
• Minimizes guessing as compared to multiple-choice or true-false items.
• Provides an objective measure of student achievement or ability.

Disadvantages of Completion items

• Time consuming to score when compared to multiple-choice or true-false items
• More difficult to score since more than one answer may have to be considered correct if the item was not properly prepared.

Rules to writing completion items

1. State the item so that only a single, brief answer is possible.
2. Start with a direct question and switch to an incomplete statement only when greater conciousness is possible by doing so.
3. It is best only to leave only one blank, and it should relate to the main point of the statement.
4. Place the blanks at the end of the statement.
