In literature, there are a few different types of writing styles. These styles are often broken down into different eras. Definition

  • Naturalism is a literary movement beginning in the late nineteenth century, similar to literary realism in its rejection of Romanticism, but distinct in its embrace of determinism, detachment, scientific objectivism, and social commentary

Naturalism, like Realism, developed out of the turmoil of the Civil War and the immediate postwar years. However, while Realism sought to give a thruthful, objective account of everyday life, Naturalism took that approach one step further by emphasizing the impersonal scientific forces that cause all events in the world.

Accuracy and fact can help solve and explain problems more effectively than opinions and emotions

Humanity's freedom of choice is limited by outside factors.

Naturalism differs from romanticism in that it does not portray the idealistic aspects of society, but rather the realistic ones. Romanticism is a genre that focuses on idealistic characters and situations. In this type of literature, the protagonist is usually some sort of hero who stands up for what they believe in, and often represents something greater than themselves. Examples of romantic literature include Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" and Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary".

Naturalism differs from realism in that it does not portray the realistic aspects of society, but rather the idealistic ones. Realism is a genre of literature that focuses on realistic portrayals of everyday life. This can include characters from all walks of life, as well as accurate descriptions of their surroundings. Historical and cultural information is often included in realism, in order to give the reader a better understanding of the characters' situations.
