An international master’s degree programme European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact (120 ECTS):

  • embraces languages and cultures from the perspective of diversity.
  • trains language professionals for a multilingual and multicultural working life.
After completion of the master’s degree, you will be able to:
  • work as an expert in European languages, language diversity and cultures for industry and for local, national and international bodies
  • conduct high-profile research in language and culturally related topics across Europe and to proceed with a PhD programme.

Programme structure

30 ECTS compulsory courses on theoretical and methodological questions of contact and diversity Shared teaching as series of lectures, online and in English 60 ECTS elective courses Courses on linguistics, foreign language learning, literature, cultural and societal studies, digital humanities… Onsite teaching in the national or other European languages 30 ECTS Master’s thesis Co-supervised by two professors at two different partner universities

Common mandatory courses (30 ECTS)

10 ECTS Discourses in Europe (Semester 1) 10 ECTS Research Methodology in European Modern Languages and Literatures (Semester 2) 10 ECTS Research Metholodogy in European Cultures and Societies (Semester 3)

Typical semester structure (30 ECTS, semester 1 to 3)

10 ECTS Online mandatory course (4 hours per week, with teaching staff from all universities 10 ECTS European Modern Languages and Linguistics: elective, face-to-face courses to be selected at each university 10 ECTS European Modern Literatures, Cultures and Societies: elective, face-to-face courses to be selected at each university

A Joint Master Programme tailored to your needs

Awarding you at least two degrees from two countries

The programme has a very international character:

  • At least two semesters must be spent at one or more partner universities (up to four partners)
  • You will get a master's degree by all the universities where a minimum of 30 ECTS has been achieved
You will be able to personalise your study plan in accordance with the course catalogue provided by the universities you’ll be studying at.

Now admitted to University 1

Getting admitted to University 2 (or 3, or 4)

  • Bachelor’s degree or a degree corresponding to 180 ECTS
  • A degree in a relevant field of studies: linguistics, applied language studies, European languages/foreign languages, modern philology, translation, culture, history, international relations or other branches of the social sciences and humanities.
  • Proficiency at a B2 level in two languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish + English as a lingua franca (no level required, except for Turku, C1)

Mandatory course "Discourses in Europe"

Basic data

Monday 11:15-12:45 CET, Thursday 15:15-16:45 CET Teaching: in English, classes will not be recorded, series of conferences by teaching staff of 7 universities Decentralized evaluation: a research paper in English or in your local language with a local tutor about a topic based on one of the lectures given by the professors. -> Around 10 pages -> To be submitted in January (30th January 2026) -> Remember: different universities, different deadlines.
