Role Theory Criticisms and Practice Barriers
Concrete
Human Agency
Role theory attempts to make abstract concepts concrete; potential for stereotypes
Role theory fails to acknowledge the creative nature and elaborate ways people live their lives
As with any theoretcial framework clinicians apply to practice, we must consider how the lens changes the picture both positively and negatively
Social Conformity
Segmentation
Role theory tends to segment roles and human activity that is typcially enfolded
Role theory tends to encourage social conformity with preconcieved constructs
(Jackson, 1998)
