QUESTIONS

MAIN ISSUES

To begin, cultural appropriation, commonly referred to as "cultural colonialism," is the taking or borrowing of something from another culture without that society's consent or comprehending the value of it. While it's not usually cultural appropriation to wear someone else's clothing, doing so as part of a costume is. Now you're undoubtedly asking yourself, "Why should I learn about cultural appropriation?" For starters, did you know that cultural appropriation encourages racism, injustice, and socioeconomic inequality in our society today?! Furthermore, statistics prove/show us how the usage of a group of people from a different culture's symbols, artifacts, genres, rituals, or technologies, can be categorized into four different subgroups: exchange, dominance, exploitation, and transculturation.

When members of a majority group adopt cultural practices from a minority group in an exploitative, insulting, or stereotyped manner, this is known as cultural appropriation. We must, however, be sure we have a working definition of culture in order to fully comprehend its effects. For instance, as we had previously covered in class, Black people experience repercussions for wearing dreadlocks from non-Black people do not. Dreadlocks on non-Black people's hair is cultural appropriation. These illustrations demonstrate how widespread the effects of cultural appropriation may reach.

Finally, to conclude, we believe that it is important for our society to truly comprehend/justify the Key difference between cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation. When someone makes an effort to grasp and learn about another culture in order to extend their perspective and establish cross-cultural relationships, they are demonstrating appreciation. On the other hand, appropriation is the act of taking a part of another culture and using it for your own benefit.
