Piazza del popolo
Monumental and elegant square, Piazza del Popolo is at the top where via del Babuino, via di Ripetta and via del Corso meet, the three main streets of the historic centre of Rome.
The urbanization of the area began in the second half of the 16th century with the construction of a first fountain, fontana del Trullo, today in Piazza Nicosia, and with the consecutive positioning of the Flaminio obelisk, high about 24 meters.
The external facade of today's Porta del Popolo (the ancient Porta Flaminia) was commissioned by Pope Pius IV to Michelangelo, who however transferred the task to Nanni di Baccio Bigio, who carried out the work between 1562 and 1565. "Felici faustoque ingressui MDCLV" ("For a happy and auspicious entrance"): this is the message engraved on the internal façade, created by Bernini for Alexander VII, on the occasion of Christina of Sweden's arrival in Rome in 1655.

Via del corso
Bordered at both ends by two of the most famous squares in Rome, Piazza Venezia and Piazza del Popolo, Via del Corso is the main artery of Capitoline shopping. It is a straight line about a kilometer and a half long, a must for shopping lovers, from here the streets of luxury and high fashion branch off.
In front of Palazzo Fendi, there is Via dei Condotti, full of charming boutiques of the most fashionable brands, which connects Via del corso and Piazza Venezia.
Via del Corso was known as Via Lata when the emperor Aureliano built a wall to defend Rome from the invasion of the Germanic tribes.
Famous people and emperors such as Augustus and Nero were buried in the imperial age.
Via del Corso became the world capital of Carnival. On 9 February 1466 the grandiose celebrations began with allegorical processions inspired by the Roman tradition and classical mythology.
The name changed from Via Lata to Via del Corso due to the carnival races.

Piazza Venezia
Located between Via del Corso and Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Venezia derives its shape from the remaking of the area, which took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, for the construction of the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II. Work of Giuseppe Sacconi, also known as Altare della Patria Its architectural structure represents an ideal ascending path that, through stairways and terraces enriched by sculptural groups and bas-reliefs, rises up to the imposing colonnaded portico surmounted by bronze chariots, allegories of the Unity of the Homeland and Freedom. The square takes its name from Palazzo Venezia, the 15th-century Palace built by Cardinal Pietro Barbo, then donated in 1560 by Pius IV to the Republic of Venice to make it the seat of the embassy. A curiosity: Americans sometimes call it wedding cake.
