History and features about task-based teaching.

To talk about task-based we need to know a little of history and caracteristics what are relevant to understand this method. First in 1976 Wilkins distinguished two types of syllabi, the sinthetic syllabi and the analythic syllabi,in this case we will take the analythic syllaby for this method, because the task-based method use this syllabi because the analytic sillaby is based in the porpuse of which people is learning a language and what they need to reach a high performance in the language. The analythic syllabi is for the task-based teaching because the method need that the student comunicate a lot and practice exercises, and there the students can use the task-based syllabi.

Syntethic syllabi vs analysthic syllaby

Analytic syllaby

Synthetic syllabi.

The analytic syllabi is based in organized the porpuse of wihch peaple is learning english and how they get the performance of the language that they are learning.in other words the analytic syllabi it can be more didactic, because it needs that the students comunicate a lot.

The synthetic syllaby is about grammar, structures, vocabulary and functions in the language. this syllaby form is to learn more of the grammar about the language that the students are learning.

vs

Task-based language teaching.

The task-based language teaching is a method where the students learn that they need when they need it, to accomplish a task they have been resolved. we need to know that the task-based language teaching (TBLT) and the task-based syllabi are diferent, because the TBLT make that the student use the structure-base comunicate task, and this is make for that the students learn how is the task they have at the moment and that help them to have the idea how to solve the task they have in that time. And the task-based syllabi is a syllabi that don't has grammar points, it is focused only in the learning from the active comunication of the learners of the language. But they can combine so well, because in the use of the TBLT the teacher needs that the students comunicate a lot to solve the tasks.

The students have to trace a path in a map of a town, hthey need to folllow directions given by the teacher.

The students need to complete a schedule about their period of the day, with the subjects they have in that first period of classes.

Find the students favorites subjects on the first period of classes of the day, the students can visit other classroms to ask others favorites subjects..

Linguistic immersion and repetition

The audiolingual method, or audio lingual method, had its peak during World War II. It is mainly based on the acquisition of a language through repetition, with emphasis on oral expression and pronunciation. The teacher focuses on speaking English (or the language you want to teach) while the student acquires speech patterns through repetition and analysis of oral language.

+ info

Characteristics of the method

  • The formation of habits through repetition.
  • The development of oral expression and understanding is given great importance over wiriting.
  • The mother tonge is not used, it is always spoken in the language intended to be taught.
  • Grammar is taught indirectly, with students learning Through listening.
  • Use positive reinforcement to build good habits.

Listening and repetition.

One of the most used characteristics of this method and that is still used today in the teaching of a language is listening and repetition, either of audios from native speakers or from the teaching staff. In its beginnings, grammar was developed using this technique, but today it is used above all to improve pronunciation, also offering the possibility of recording students so that they can listen to themselves later, compare their pronunciation with the correct form and analyze their errors.

The objectives pursued when using the audio lingual method are several:

  • Develop oral comunication skills in the language you want to learn.
  • Have a high level of pronunciation.
  • Fluency in oral conversations.
  • Command of the language like a native speaker.

Advantages of its use in teaching English

This method is used in various languages for learning, combined with other methodologies and ways of teaching. In the case of teaching English, several advantages are observed with respect to the use of the audiolingual method.

+ info

By using english

At all times in the classroom, a general context of English immersion is created that encourages language learning and forces students to express themselves in that language in any situation, which develops self-learning by seeking the correct way to communicate a message. Relying on audios to analyze and compare the student's pronunciation with the correct form helps them to notice their mistakes more easily, achieving a better pronunciation.

+ info

By deepening oral communication

A very broad learning of it is created that facilitates contact with other English-speaking people. This method combined with others give rise to a good teaching of the English language. As stated above, there is no single way of teaching, the needs of the students must be observed and the best way to promote the development of English as a foreign language must be chosen.

Information-gap task.

An information-gap activity, which we saw used previously in CLT and now in TBLT, involves the exchange of information among participants in order to complete a task.

+ info

Opinion-gap task.

An opinion-gap task requires that students express their personal preferences, feelings, or attitudes in order to complete the task.

+ info

Reasoning-gap Task

A reasoning-gap activity requires that students derive some new information by inferring it from information they have already been given.

Unfocused Tasks and Focused Tasks

Unfocused tasks are tasks designed to provide learners with opportunities for communicating generally.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Task-based language teaching.

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • This method is so interactive because the students need to comunicate a lot to complete the task.
  • The teacher allways give feedback to the students when they do something wrong.
  • The teacher can use a lot of tasks to work on the topics that he is teaching.
  • These method don't use grammar points to work.
  • The students can't continue whit other task if they finish the task that they have been working.
  • The students learn only that they need for the task.
